Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook October 31-November 6, 2013

Temperatures:

Temperatures averaged 3 to 5 degrees C above-normal across southeast Kazakhstan from October 20-26, while temperatures averaged near to slightly below-normal across the remainder of the region. During the next week, temperatures are forecast to average above-normal across the region.

Widespread freezing temperatures (-4 to 0 degrees C) occurred last week across northeast Kazakhstan which is typical for late October. The coldest temperatures (-5 degrees C or lower) will likely be limited to the higher elevations of northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan during the first week of November.

Precipitation

During the past week, northern Kazakhstan received light to moderate precipitation (2 to 20 mm), while snow likely fell in the mountains of northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Precipitation anomalies are close to average during the past 30 days. Light rain is forecast for northern Kazakhstan during the next week, while light snow affects the higher elevations of northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
