numerouspreviouslyunrecordedstructures,but the maplackedin sufficientprecisionto enablefurtherarchitecturalstudy(Bylandand Pohl1994:Map10).In 1999,a regionalsurveyof thecentralpartof theNuuDzauiregiondedicatedtimetocreatea furthermapofthesite (Balkanskyetat.2004:Figure9),whichunfortunatelyfailedtoinclude someresidentialstructures,inclusingonecomplexexcavatedbyCaso (Recently,promisingmappingandsurveyactivitieswereexecutedatthe site(Glewpersonalcommunication2004),in partaimedat identifying possibleneighborhoodsat MonteNegro.
In2000weconductedanintensivesurveyofMonteNegromappingthe non-residentialas wellas residentialareasin itsentiretyusinga Total Station(VanBroekhovenetal.2000).Wedefinedtheprobablelimits of thehabitationareas, dependingonthearchitecturalremainsaswell as surfacematerials. In additionto registeringthe materialremains, ouraimsincludedcreatinga registryof thephysicalconditionsof the monumentalresidentialas wellas non-residentialstructures,in order to determinepossibleproblemsof conservation.Resultsindicatethe intricaterelationshipsbetweenapparentlydifferentarchitecturalfea- turesat thesite, andhence, theneedforanevaluationofpoliticaland religiousmotifsandtheirmaterialexpressionsduringearlyurbantimes.
Emphasizingthesemotifsinsitearchitecturerequiresa liberalizationof previousunderstandingsofurbanism.Traditionally,urbanismisidenti- fiedwheresocioeconomiccomplexityincreasesandforexamplemonu- mentalarchitectureisexpressedinthearchaeologicalrecord(Cowgill 2003:I). Inadditionhowever,linksbetweenleadershipandreligionare alsoindicativeofanincreasein thecomplexityof socialorganization (cf.InomataandHouston2001:13-15),andserveto betterunderstand symbolismandmeaningin NuuDzauiarchitecture.Consideringthe shortoccupationaltime-span,andtakingintoaccountthe absenceof lateroccupationswhichmighthavealteredor diminishedvisibilityon theinitialEarlyRamosperiodarchitecturallay-out;MonteNegrois a suitableexampleforaddressingtheseissues.
Regardingtheselaterperiods, the perceptionof MonteNegroin fol- lowingperiodsmustbeaddressedinorderto clarifypolitico-religious changesthatoccurredin thetransitionalperiodof theLateClassicto EarlyPostclassic(A.D.800-1000),andwhichare underscoredin the pictorialNuuDzauimanuscriptsdatingfromthe LatePostclassic.
Methodologicallythisisjustifiedbyfollowingpreviouslinesofresearch, viewingthe NuuDzauiregionas a relativelycoherentarea,notjust geographicallybutalsohistorically(Spores1972).Thesetransforma- tionspresumablyoccurredthroughouttheNuuDzauiregionandgreater Mesoamerica,butin thecaseof thesemanuscripts,theyspecifically referto politico-religiouseventsat Tilantongo,usingMonteNegroas animportantbackground.
URBANIZATIONINNUUDZAUI
As in widerMesoamerica,in Oaxacanarchaeologicalstudiesthe paramountfocusof investigationhasbeenon the initialandensuing developmentofsocialcomplexity;assertingthatsocietyconsistedofat leasttwosocialstrataorclassesandcontinuedtoevolveintoagrowingly
complexsociety,eventuallymeritingthenameofanearlystate.Analysis hastakenplaceprimarilythroughthegeneralevolutionarylookingglass (e.g.Byland1980:1-3;Spores1972),tobefollowedbymulti-linearor specificevolution(e.g.Flannery&Marcus1983:1-9).Assuch,archaeo- logicalinterpretationshavereliedonaspectssuchasshiftingpatternsin theconfigurationofsettlementsacrossthelandscape(foranoverviewsee Balkansky1999).Main'thresholds'inevolvingcomplexityaretheinitial processofurbanizationandtheprocessesofstateformation,identified architecturallybythelargemonumentalcentersofthelong-lastingClassic LasFlaresperiod(AD.200-1000),andthearchitecturallylessdominant city-statecentersofthePostclassicNatividadperiod(A.D.1000-1500).
Thepoliticalstructuresinvolvedin theonsetandlaterchangesin this urbanizingprocess,arereflecteduponinthedirecthistoricalapproach, involvingthestudyofearlyhistoricaldocumentsoriginatingintheNuu Dzauiregion,utilizedextensivelybyRonaldSpores(1967,1974,1976, 1983c,1984,1993).Reflectionsontheimportanceandreinterpretation ofearliersettlementsduringsubsequentperiodsarenearlynon-existent in thisdebate(butsee Hamann2002).In recentreviewsof Oaxacan archaeology,theparadigmaticfocuson long-termcomplexitystudied throughlarge-scalesettlementsurveyshasbeenstressed,andnofunda- mentalchangesin thislineof researchwereprognosticatedforfuture studies(Balkanskyetal.2000;Finsten2001).
MONTENEGROINOAxACANPERSPECTIVE
Asmentionedabove,initialurbanizationintheNuuDzauiregionoccurred duringattheonsetoftheLateFormativeperiod,orEarlyRamosinthe localchronology(300-100RC.).Settlementpatterndatahaverevealed thatduringthatperiodasignificantnumberofsitesappearedatormoved tospecificgeographiclocations(Spores1972).Inaddition,preexisting sitesintheNuuDzauiregionsuchasYucuita,CerroJazmin,Huamelulpan andMonteNegrogrewtoconsiderablesizes(Spores1983b).
Althoughelementsrelatedto the studyof urbanizationin the Nuu Dzauiregion, suchas settlementpatterningandsettlementhierarchy, architecturalfeatures, and populationsizeshavereceivedsignificant attentioninrecentyears, muchof thedebatehascenteredonconfirm- ingor discreditingthe infamous'conquestmodel',revolvingaround thenatureandformof MonteAlban'swidersocio-economicalinflu- encein regionsneighboringontheValleyofOaxaca.Inpartbasedon theiconographicanalysisof numerousiconographicscenesfixedon BuildingJ at MonteAlban(Marcus1976,1983seeUrcid2001:61-63 fora critique);andthepresenceofgray-wareceramicsintheseadjacent regions, thisdebatemirrorsthepopularnotionthataninitialimpetusfor urbanizationin the NuuDzauiregionwasprovidedthroughcoercive interactionwithprimarycentersintheValleyofOaxaca, headedbythe settlementofMonteAlban.Confirmationforthisthesishasprimarily, anditseemsexclusively, beenfoundinthesurveyandexcavationdata fromtheneighboringCuicatlanCanada(SpencerandRedmond1997).
