23RD WORKSHOP ON LOGIC, LANGUAGE, INFORMATION AND COMPUTATION (WoLLIC 2016)

CO-SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR SYMBOLIC LOGIC

Puebla, Mexico August 16–19, 2016

The 23rd Workshop on Logic, Language, Information and Computation (WoLLIC 2016) was held in Puebla, Mexico, from August 16th to 19th, hosted by Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP) and with support from the Computer Science Department and the Mathematics Department. It was the twenty-third in a series of workshops that started in 1994 with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary research in pure and applied logic.

The workshop had the scientific sponsorship of the Association for Symbolic Logic (ASL), Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI), Interest Group in Pure and Applied Logics (IGPL), European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), European Association for Computer Science Logic (EACSL), Brazilian Computer Science Society (SBC), and Brazilian Logic Society (SBL).

The members of the Program Committee were: S. Abramsky (Oxford University), D. Berganger (Universit´e Paris-Saclay), G. Bezhanishvili (New Mexico State University), A. Durand (Universit´e Paris Diderot, Paris 7), P. Galliani (University of Helsinki), N. Gierasimczuk (University of Amsterdam), J. Groenendijk (University of Amsterdam), L. Hella (Tampere University), W. Holliday (University of California, Berkeley), J. Kontinen (University of Helsinki), L. Moss (Indiana University), A. Nies (University of Auckland), A. Ranta (Chalmers University), M. Sadrzadeh (Queen Mary College, London), N. Short (Aix-Marseille Universit´e), J. V¨a¨an¨anen (University of Helsinki and University of Amsterdam, Chair), R. Verbrugge (University of Groningen), H. Vollmer (University of Hannover), D. Westerstahl (Stockholm University).

The Organizing Committee was: C. Zepeda Cort´es (BUAP, Local co-chair), M. Osorio Galindo (UDLAP, Local co-chair), A. G. de Oliveira (Universidade Federal de Pernam-buco), R. de Queiroz (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Co-chair), J. R. Arrazola Ram´ırez (BUAP, Local co-chair), and several members of the Cuerpo Acad´emico C ´omputo Distribuido CA-161 PRODEP (BUAP).

There were six invited talks:

Pablo Barcel ´o (Universidad de Chile), Semantic acyclicity for conjunctive queries:

approxi-mations and constraints.

Dana Bartosov´a (University of Toronto), Ultrafilters in dynamics and Ramsey theory. Johann A. Makowsky (Technion – Israel Institute of Technology), Semantic equivalence of

graph polynomials definable in second order logic.

Alessandra Palmigiano (TU Delft), Proof systems for the logics for social behavior. Sonja Smets (University of Amsterdam), Informational cascades: a test for rationality? Andres Villaveces (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), Sheaves of metric structures.

The invited talk by Dana Bartosov´a had to be delivered by a remote video connection due to unforeseen circumstances.

The program also included the following tutorial lectures: Belief dynamics in a social

con-text by Sonja Smets; Generalized amalgamation classes and limit models: implicit logics by

Andres Villaveces; Query languages for graph databases by Pablo Barcel ´o; Sahlqvist

corre-spondence via duality and its applications by Alessandra Palmigiano; When is P = NP over arbitrary structures? by Johann Makowsky.

WoLLIC 2016 271

On the morning of August 16th, a special session was held in a tribute to the memory and the legacy of Solomon Feferman (December 13, 1928–July 26, 2016), with presentations by John Baldwin, Johann Makowsky, and Jouko V¨a¨an¨anen. Written testimonies were sent by Valeria de Paiva and Wilfried Sieg, the latter having arrived in time to be read during the session.

On the evening of August 16th, a special screening of a movie about a mathematician was held at the Paraninfo (BUAP): Counting from Infinity—Yitang Zhang and the Twin Prime

Conjecture, directed by George Csicsery, (2015, 55 min).

The Program Committee received 46 submissions out of which 23 were selected for presentation.

The abstracts of papers presented at the meeting will be published in the Logic Journal

of the Interest Group in Pure and Applied Logics (Oxford University Press). The proceedings

of the meeting were published as vol. 9803 of the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (FoLLI subseries), published by Springer. A special issue of the Annals of Pure and Applied

Logic, guest edited by R. de Queiroz and J. V¨a¨an¨anen, will include the peer-reviewed full

versions of a selection of papers.
