Alles was wir sehen, ist ein Bild
Philipp Otto Runge geldt als een van de radicaalste vernieuwers van de Duitse schilderkunst aan het begin van de 19de eeuw. De reden: hij brak met de heersende classicistische traditie en zocht naar nieuwe wegen voor de kunst. Échte kunst, zei Runge, is als religie: zij is spreekbuis van het onzichtbare, onvatbare, oneindige.
Maar is dát werkelijk de betekenis van Runges werk? Zijn zijn schilderijen door-geefluik van de goddelijke stem? Dit boek schetst een ander beeld. Het plaatst zijn werk in de traditie van de vroeg-romantische poëzietheorie, die zegt dat taal geen doorgeefluik is maar een eigen werkelijkheid schept. Als geen ander maakt Runge zichtbaar dat deze vraag ook aan de schilderkunst gesteld kan worden: kan zij wel iets anders tonen dan zichzelf?
Pauline Kintz (1957) is kunsthistorica, gespecialiseerd in de vroeg-roman-tische kunst en kunsttheorie van rond 1800 in Duitsland, en verbonden aan het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
