CURRICULUM VITAE

Matthijs Scheltema was born on July 17th 1990 in Soest, the Netherlands. In 2009 he graduated from the Baarnsch Lyceum and continued his education at the University of Amsterdam by studying medicine. During medical school he developed his interest for medical research by studying the physiological effects of bile acids, both in Amsterdam and during his 6-month research rotation in Copenhagen, Denmark. He did his senior clerkship at the department of urology of the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam with a keen interest to become a urologist. In December 2015 he graduated with distinction from medical school after which he continued his career with a combined clinical and research appointment at the Department of Urology of the Academic Medical Center. He completed his PhD under the supervision of prof. dr. J.J. de la Rosette, during which he coordinated and conducted multiple studies concerning focal therapy and imaging for localized prostate cancer. During his PhD he spent 5 months in Sydney, Australia, after obtaining a fellowship grant from the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre Australia. In this research fellowship, under the supervision of professor Phillip D. Stricker, he was appointed to coordinate the clinical research department on focal therapy for prostate cancer. His PhD project and research fellowship resulted in the writing of this thesis in 2017. Matthijs is currently appointed as surgical resident in training at the Flevoziekenhuis in Almere, as part of his urology training at the medical center of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS/DANKWOORD

Dear prof. Stricker, dear Phil, although you did not have an official position as supervisor in my PhD project, you taught me a lot about prostate cancer and focal therapy. I really enjoyed my time at St. Vincent’s and respect your work and clinic, how you combine it with your personal life and the opportunities you provide to others. I hope that we will be able to work together again in the future.

Geachte leescommissie, geachte heren.

Arnie en Chrissie, prostate boys for life.

Dear Garvan peeps, it was lovely to work with you guys. We were able to accomplish a lot together in the months that I was working at the Garvan. But most of all, I really enjoyed my position at the Garvan due to all the fantastic coffee, farewell beers, Aussie rules footie and lunches. I hope that we will work together again in the near future.
