Four years have passed since I arrived in Amsterdam. Studying to get a PhD diploma is quite a life experience punctuated by moments of joy, moments of frustration. Moments you share with the people accompanying you during this journey, and you are one of them either from the lab, from Amsterdam, from France or else. This part of my thesis is dedicated to you, to thank you for your support and your friendship.

I would like to thank a lot Prof. Joost Reek to trust me and to give me the opportunity to discover a new country, to get to know amazing people from all around the world and to do innovative, interesting and challenging chemistry. Joost, you were here during the exciting periods of my PhD: the conferences, the publications of articles and a book chapter but also during the hard times, when the chemistry is not really on your side, that was important for me, thank you.

I am grateful to the present and former staff members: dr. Bas de Bruin (thanks to be part of my committee), dr. Jarl Ivar van Vlugt (thanks for all the comments on my thesis), dr. Han van den Heuvel and dr. Frantisek Hartl for their suggestions and the discussions during the meetings and in the lab. Thanks also to Prof. dr. C. J. Elsevier, Prof. dr. H. Hiemstra, Prof. dr. J. G. de Vries, Prof. dr. S. Jugé, dr. S. Otto and dr. C. Bruneau for accepting to be the committee for my PhD defence.

Then, I would like to thank all the present and past technicians for their daily work to run a so well and abundantly equipped lab: Erik Duin-Berteling (thanks also for the poker times), Fatna Ait El Maate, Lidy van der Burg, Zohar Abiri (thanks also for the chats about books, movies…), Taasje Mahabiersing and Lars van der Zande. My gratitude also to the people who helped me for the measurements: Jan-Meine Ernsting and Jan Geenevasen for the NMR, Han Peeters for the mass analyses and dr. Maxime Siegler for the X ray structure.

I would like to thank also all the people who have been (and are) working in the B9.16 lab where the best atmosphear and music have prevealed every single day, except during Christmas time; even the computer decided to crash to avoid to play again those terrible songs. Thanks to Rosalba Bellini (movies and parties were really good moments and thank you to accept to be my paranimph), Quinten Knijnenburg (for making the office and the lab so alive), Samir Chikkali (thanks also for the comments on Chapter 3), Tehila Koblenz (for the nice talks in every possible languages), Alessandra Cavarzan (for the big smile every morning that helps to start the day), Chretien Simons, Rene den

Heeten, Franco Doro (thanks also for keeping History alive), Mark Kuil, Erik Zuidema.

I am grateful to all the people who were there when I started as a rookie: Silvia Arevale Heras, Fabrizio Ribaudo (thanks also for the passionate football games and the nice dinners with all the people of Fokke Simonszstraat), Aldo Caiazzo, Lisa Knight, Gledison Fonseca, Elsbeth Goudriaan, Angelica Marson, Teresa Monzon Merchan, Ruifang Chen, Xiao Bin Jiang and Jitte Flapper. I would like to thank the people who are still here, who left not so long ago or who just arrived: Sander Kluwer, Guillaume Berthon (thanks for all the coments on my thesis and articles, for the “hard n heavy” talks about chemistry and all the rest), Markus Finger, Remco Detz, Ronald Lindner, Piluka Pilar del Rio Varea, Dennis Hetterscheid, Tendai Gadzikwa (thanks for the comments about my cover), Erica Jellema (thanks for the nice times during borrels, dinner), Ivo Jacobs (thanks for the alternative parties), Frederic Patureau (thanks for the ureaphosphine), Jurjen Meeuwissen (thanks for all the football games, the great time outside the lab), Fabrizio Marras (thanks for being my roommate for almost one year, the parties), Johanneke Ernsting (thanks for helping me to deal with the Dutch bureaucracy), Vladica Bocokic (that was really good to have you in the lab and in the same street, thanks for all the quality time, dinners, conferences, parties and maybe see you in France), Jeroen Wassenaar (thanks for good time during our different trips, from Barcelona to Washington), Wojciech Dzik (thanks for the football, dinners and vodka time), Nicole Franssen, Alma Olivos Suarez (thanks for the amazing mojitos), Pawel Dydio (thanks for the polish dinner, first time 14 people, not bad), Annemarie Walters (thanks to the always happy girl for the RTTR time), Ruta Kapre, Miguel Rubio, Patricia Merce, Axel Kollhofer, Irshad Ahmad, Sumesh Kureppadathuraman, Massimo Casanova and Eoin Rafter (thanks for the great time in Dublin and the really good fun in Amsterdam).

I am grateful to some people outside the lab: Julie Excoffon (pour m’avoir fait découvrir une région des Pays-Bas où je serais certainement jamais allé et pour les petits we excellents), Thomas Bernard (merci mec pour les sessions foot, les vacances en Turquie et toutes nos conversations), Deniz Gunbas (thanks for the good times as neighbor, to make me appreciate (a little) cats such as Karamel and all the nice Turkish dinners) and some students for the time we spent at work and at the RTTR: Ruben Drost, Nigel Stift, Iris de Krom, Sandra de Boer and Carolien van der Zwaart. I was playing also football with great teammates (or opponents): Gordon Lim, Salvo Minissale, Alex ter Beek, Mauro de Pra, Victor Guevara Masis, Yves Fomekong Nanfack, Alessia Gasparini and Arnaud Spangenberg. After four years of training, we ended 10th of the Roeterseiland Tournament, the best Homkat ranking (as far as I know or at least much better than the couple of years before).
