Acknowledgment

Finally it is time to end the story, but not before thanking all the people who have been a part of my PhD life. This book is the result of joint efforts of people from different labs and I am thankful to all of them. Remembering the past 4 years is a challenging task, and so please forgive me if I have forgotten to mention your name here..

First I would like to thank my supervisor Prof. E. Aronica for giving me the opportunity to work with her and for showing confidence in me despite the fact I was inexperienced and not organized. Thanks for all your help in teaching me neuropathology and improving my scientific skills. Thanks to Prof. D. Troost for his supervision, his help with the reviewing of my thesis and for his perseverance in asking me the same question throughout the four years of my PhD: “How is it going with your Duch?” I am sorry because most of the times my answer was: “Like yesterday..”

A special thank goes to Dr. A. Iyer (Anand) for being my supervisor, colleague and friend: thanks for all the scientific discussion we had (also that one in Barcelona at 4 a.m.), thanks for helping me when I didn’t have a house, and thanks because you never got tired of ex-plaining me how to perform lab techniques that I had never done before. Thanks to

Cate-rina, for all her help with WB and her attempt to let me enjoy it… you did a great job!

Thanks to previous and current members of the Neuropathology group Avanita, Jasper,

Jane, Karin, Rene, Astrid for being always nice and friendly despite the obvious cultural

differences.

Thanks to previous and current colleagues from the department of Pathology Elena (thanks also for paranymphing me). Armando e Annarella: it was really nice to work in the same environment and very funny to escape from it in our way..

Thanks to Prof. W. Wadmann, for giving me the opportunity to visit his lab; his teammate

Dr. J. Gorter, Erwin and Linda for the nice time we spent in the lab; and thanks to Quiluan,

for sharing the setup with me.

Thanks to Dr. Carmignoto (caro Giorgio) for receiving me so kindly in his lab in Padova, for sharing his passion for science every day on that glass board, always full, also because of

Gabri e Mario (who I also thank for his effort to let me fit in his group of friends and for

call-ing me terroncello). Thanks to Angela for teachcall-ing me how to measure calcium signals, for sharing her research line and setup with me also when it was overbooked.

Thanks to Marco, Felipe, Evan, Valeria to make my life in Amsterdam (and not only) a lot funnier and easier: I am glad to have you as friends. Thanks to M.J. who basically saved my life in 2009.

Thanks to Florie for tolerating all the bad habits that I had and still be nice and bake all those cakes with me: it was nice to live with you. Thanks to Julien (also paranymph) for all the fun

293 time we always spend together: I’m glad to say that there can be friendship between Italians and French.
