Preface
This Catalysis Today issue contains papers presenting fun-damentalunderstandingofphotocatalytic conversionson semi-conductor surfaces. The latest advances on structure activity relationshipsanddescriptionsofthemechanismofphotocatalytic conversionsaresummarized.Wewouldliketogratefully acknowl-edgeallcontributorstothisissuefortheiroutstandingeffortsand providingcontributionsofhighquality.

contributionisanabinitioinvestigationoftheeffectsofnon-metal doping(B,C,NandF)ontheperformanceofAnatase.Thethird contributionprovidesmoredetail ontheeffects ofN-dopingon performanceinthephotocatalyticabatementofNOx. Fundamen-talunderstandingofsurfacemodificationbyfluorineisprovided inthenextcontribution.Thisisfollowedbya descriptionofan operandoDRIFTS(infrared)studyoftheroleofhydroxylsgroups intrichloroethylenephoto-oxidationovertitanateandTiO2

Many aspects of TiO2 based photocatalysis have been
thor-oughlyanalyzedandapictureemergesoftheimportanceofvarious structuralandsurfacechemicalparameters.Westronglybelieve futurestudiesshouldfocusonbothphysical(lifetimesofexcited states,fluorescence)andsurfacechemicalcharacterizationof exist-ingandnovelphotocatalysts.Insituspectroscopies(e.g.Infrared, Raman),modeling,andtheoryshouldbeextensivelyexploitedwith theaimtoobtainaclearunderstandingofthephotocatalytic behav-ior.Thiswillultimatelyallowforarationalandsuccessfuldesign ofnewsemiconductormaterials,whichpossesthefollowing char-acteristicsof(i)alow toxicity,(ii)efficientabsorptionofvisible light,(iii)stability(absenceofphoto-corrosion),(iv)highsurface area,(v)largeavailabilityand(vi)lowcost.WehopethisCatalysis Todayissueinspirestoinitiatethesestudies.
