Curriculumm vitae
Samiraa Bührer-Sékula was born on June 10, 1955 in Guarapuava, Brazil. In 1978 she received her bachelor'ss degree in biochemistry, cum laude, at the Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa, in Parana,, Brazil. After graduation she worked in diagnostic laboratories for parasitology, haematology,, biochemistry and microbiology. When her husband's work required a move to anotherr region, she found other work in the same region, first as a clerk for Banco do Brasil S.A. fromm 1983 to 1985 then from 1986 until 1989 as the successful joint-owner and manager of a clothingg factory. In 1990 she moved with her husband to England and later in the year to The Netherlands,, and for a few years she dedicated her time to her family and to learning English. In
19933 she worked as a volunteer for the Netherlands Leprosy Relief, translating a handbook for fieldd project leaders from English into Portuguese. From 1994 to 1995, she followed the Biomedicall Research Development Course given jointly by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Amsterdam,, and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, leading to a Master's degree in Biomedicall Research Management. For her M.Sc. thesis, she performed a project in the Departmentt of Biomedical Research of the KIT, on leprosy immunology. After receiving her Master'ss degree in 1995 she was invited to continue working at the same KIT department, where shee presently has a position as a research associate. During the past five years, she has not only plannedd and carried out the research in the Netherlands and Brazil reported in this thesis, but also hass assisted in the M.Sc. research projects of 6 students from 2 universities in the Netherlands on aa variety of topics related to her own research.
