Veral die whisky by nam e O ’Sullivan’s S hannon Blend Superior Whisky het nogal redelike be- kendheid verwerf.

FEW people have ever seen a live pangolin in the O .F.S. and we appeal to persons w ho can give us m ore inform ation on the occurrence o f this animal to w rite to the M useum.
T he Pangolin or scaly an te ate r, Manis tem -
m in c k ii is a toothless m am m al characterized by
an a rm o u r o f scales (w hich are m odified hairs). The underside o f the head, neck and body and inside o f the legs are scaled. The eyes and ears are very small.
The pangolin feeds up o n certain ants and te r m ites w hich it o btains by breaking open the m ounds w ith its sh o rt forelegs eq uipped with long digging ciaws. T he long sticky protactiJe tongue to which the insects adhere, is th en in serted in to the nest.
One y o ung is b o rn a t a tim e and is carried aro u n d on the base o f the tail of the m o th er. When d isturbed th e female curls up (like a hedgehog) enveloping her young.
The to tal length o f a pangolin is ap p ro x im ate ly 900 mm and it has a mass o f 10 kg. Very little is know n a b o u t its distrib u tio n . However, it appears th a t this animal never occurred fu r th er south than the Orange River and th a t it
is restricted to savannah veld.
There is reason to believe th a t there may still be a few pangolins left in the O .F.S. as one was killed in 1968 on the highway betw een Boshof and Kim berley. The only o th e r recorded speci men fo r the O .F.S. is one collected in 1895 in the H oopstad district. A part from the H oopstad specim en there are tw o o th er m o u n ted pango lins in the collection o f the N ational Museum. N o in fo rm a tio n on their localities can be traced , how ever. The M useum also has one u n born y oung on display. This was o b tain ed from R hodesia a n u m b er o f years ago and d o n ated to the M useum by P rof. A. J . D. Meiring.
