Henkk van Stel is geboren op 12 januari 1967 in Wemeldinge. Hij behaalde in 1985 het atheneumm B diploma aan het Christelijk Lyceum voor Zeeland in Goes. In dat jaar begon hijj aan de studie Medische Biologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. In 1993 studeerde hij aff metals afstudeerrichtingen algemene gezondheidszorgen epidemiologie. Na een korte periodee als onderzoeker bij de vakgroep Algemene Gezondheidszorg (prof. dr. A.J.P. Schrijvers)) van de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht begon hij in november 1993 als onderzoeker bij Astmacentrumm Heideheuvel in Hilversum. In 1996 werd daar gestart met de uitvoering van hett onderzoek dat in dit proefschrift beschreven is, met prof. dr. W. Everaerd (vakgroep Klinischee Psychologie, Universiteit van Amsterdam) en later ook prof. dr. J.M. Bogaard (Longfunctielaboratorium,, Erasmus Medisch Centrum Rotterdam) als promotores. In 1998 volgdee hij de postdoctorale opleiding epidemiologie bij het EMGO-instutuut van de Vrije Universiteit,, waarop registratie als Epidemioloog A volgde. Van 1997 tot 2002 was hij als promovenduss lid van de onderzoeksschool Experimental Psychopathology. Wegens RSI raaktee hij in 1998 in de W A O . Sinds januari 2002 is hij werkzaam als onderzoeker op het gebiedd van kwaliteitvan leven- en gezondheidstoestandmetingen bij de afdeling Medical Technologyy Assessment van het Julius Centrum voor Gezondheidswetenschappen en Eerstelijnsgeneeskunde,, Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht.
Henkk van Stel is getrouwd met Elsie Hijstek. Samen hebben zij twee kinderen, Artos (1998) enn Taran (2002).
