Thee author of this thesis was born on April 18, 1966 in Jaén (Spain). He was raised inn Linares and graduated from the Institute de Bachillerato Huarte de San Juan in 1984,, showing interest for the wonders of Biology, as carefully taught by Prof. F. Cantabella.. The same year, he started medical school in the University of Granada. Hiss first steps in research were given during a internship at the department of Endocrinologyy of the academic hospital, under supervision of Prof. Dr. F. Escobar. Hee obtained his medical doctor degree in 1990.
Afterr gaining access to the Spanish national system for clinical specialization (MIR), hee started his training in Pediatrics at the Ramón y Cajal university hospital in Madrid.. His rotation in Pediatric Endocrinology, under the supervision of Dr. R. Barrio,, expanded his interest in the field. In 1994, after a stay at the department of Endocrinologyy of the Children's hospital in Boston, he opted for endocrinology for thee final year specialization in pediatrics.
Inn 1996, after obtaining the degree in Pediatrics, he started basic research on the mechanismss of thyroid transcription at the laboratory of Dr. P. Santisteban, in the Institutee for Biomedical Research (MB) in Madrid. In 1998, he moved to the laboratoryy of pediatric endocrinology in the Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the Universityy of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, under the auspices of a research fellowshipp of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) to perform thee research described in this thesis, under supervision of Prof. Dr. J.J.M. de Vijlder andd Dr. C. Ris-Stalpers. The author hopefully waits for the decision on a postdoctorall NWO (Dutch Science Organization) grant application to proceed his careerr in biomedical research in the AMC.
