These four years at API have really been a quest for me, in the medieval romance meaning: an expedition made by a knight (me!) to accomplish a prescribed task (getting the Holy Grail of diploma!). And there it is. . . My quest is done. . . I have slayed the dragon and found the Thesis!!

Many people, over the years, contributed to that success. First of all, Sera, thank you for giving me the opportunity to work at API, despite my lack of astronomical academic background. I was young and naive when I arrived five years ago in Ams-terdam. I have learnt a lot during these years at your side. You made me stronger. I deeply thank you for that. Ralph, you have been a great promotor. Despite your busy agenda, your door is always open to help and advice young, lost padawan like me. I really appreciated that.

A journey without companions is like a night without the stars: dark and sad. Pe-ter, Salomé, you are my brothers in arms. I will miss our discussions, brainstorming sessions and conversations about anything and everything. This journey has brought me great friendships that I value: Rich, Montse, Caroline, Yuri, Maithili, Theo, Os-car, Gijs, Danai, Daniela, Kostas, Mihkel, Eduardo, Thijs C., Maciej, Lianne, Martin, and Evert, I am happy to call you my friends.

Along the way, I have met a lot of people that contributed in a way or an other to the achievement of this quest and they all deserve my thanks. First of all, my collaborators, Chris and Jason. Chris, thank you for your patience and help in getting

the GRMHD project to an end. Jason, you are a source of inspiration for me. Then the APIs, past, present, and by adoption. My first officemates, Manu, Paolo and Ton as well as the ones I had in the different locations of the new building: Nathalie, Yi-Jung, Frank, Peter B., Stephano, Antonia and Olga. The Jet setters: Sjoert, Sander, Catia, Oliver, with a special thank to Dipankar, for helping me even after you left for the land across the big sea. The staff members: Anna, Lex, Carsten, Michiel, Ed, Jacco, Rens, Phil, with a special thought for Alex, Rudy and Huib. Michael, thanks for introducing me to the whiskey bar and its spirits. Nanda, Ale, Diego, Dave, Alexander, Sjors, Dario, Yvette, Sarka, Lucas, Rik, Thijs P., Bertrand, John, Christian, and all the others, thanks for accompaning me part of the journey. And last but not least, thanks a lot Lidewijde, Minou, Milena, Eva, Marieke, Natalie and Nicole. We would be lost without you.

Without my friends, I wouldn’t have made it that far. Cin, what started as a flatmate relationship became an inspiring friendship. Thanks for sharing your inner light.

JTM2

I have a special thought for my family in Syria. Guys hang in there, stay alive, hopefully all this nightmare will be over soon and we will go eat falafel sandwiches together again.

My last words will be for that amazing person who embarked in this journey with me, out of love. Delphine, no word can correctly express what I feel. You picked me up every time I fell, you kept pushing me forwards and making sure I do not lose sight of my dreams. It is now my turn to take care of you.
