Besides doing research, teaching, and service work for the experiment, being a PhD student also means becoming an independent researcher. That does not mean at all, however, that the work described in this thesis has been carried out without any help. I would therefore like to thank everybody who took part in this process.
I am especially grateful to my promotor Els Koffeman and to my co-promotor/super-visor Auke-Pieter Colijn, who offered me the PhD position supported by his VIDI grant (which has an inspiring title). With their highly efficient guidance as a team, I have managed to carry out my research and write this thesis within the (maybe for me somewhat surprisingly) achieved time scale. Furthermore, I thank Eric Laenen for his support as C3 advisor. I appreciate his volunteering to give feedback on parts of this thesis and to explain some topics. The ‘impostor syndrome’ is one of them, and probably most PhD students will recognise it to some extent.
I thank all the people of the ATLAS group at Nikhef and at CERN for the pleasant cooperation. I am indebted in particular to Stan Bentvelsen, Wouter Verkerke, and Ivo van Vulpen for all the support they gave me, notably for the t¯tcross section measurement during the (extensive) CSC exercise. Ivo helped me a lot with the continuation of the work they started. Wouter taught me the tricks needed to make the grid work for me and to efficiently produce many Monte Carlo samples at a large scale. And, while mentioning the word ‘grid’, I also acknowledge Hurng-Chun Lee for helping out with all the Ganga-related issues at a later stage.
Finally, I thank Leif L¨onnblad, for giving me the opportunity to work on Ariadne via an MCnet short-term studentship, and Nils Lavesson, for the assistance during those four months. It was a very valuable experience to be in the theoretical environment of the THEP department at the Lund University for a while. Moreover, I thank all the people there for their hospitality.

It’s not over yet: there are many more people who contributed to my PhD during working hours, outside them, or both. I keep it short, to prevent transforming these acknowledgements into a biography. First of all I thank all my fellow Nikhef’ers. I enjoyed many social activities with them, from ‘quick, quick coffees’ to vrimibo’s at PCH/B.54 and beyond2. One of them, Dox, I mention in particular since he had to
suffer from my typical nightly typing sessions the last year as a housemate, cheers dude! The crossover from work to sports and beers was often a welcome change. I thank the Nikhef/Amef indoor soccer teams, the AMVJ hockey team H3, and the guys of the irregular squash sessions for that. Then, Blondje (Michel), Buurman #106 (Andrew), Erikje, Joost, Lauwe, Niek, Ramon, Remco, Sanneke, Schimanski (Werner), Wouter, and of course my paranymphs Pieter and Mo’tje (m’n maatje Monique): thanks for those fine hours into oblivion. . . Finally, I thank my mother and Ben, together with my two brothers and their families for their moral support and interest during all those years. And without her, things would have been much harder: un bacio grande per mio tesoro, Ilaria!
