Acknowledgments

First of all I would like to thank Jean-Sébastien Caux. His attitude towards work and life had a huge and very inspiring impact on me. I am very grateful for all the time that I spent as his student, for his support and for numerous stimulating discussions (not restricted exclusively to physics). I wish we could continue working together.

Very significant part of this thesis originated from a common project with Adilet Imam-bekov and Aditya Shashi. I am extremely grateful both of them for incorporating me into the team and for the work we did together. Meeting Adilet, although only for a brief moment, will always be one of the most memorable moments of my life.

There were many people greatly contributing over the years to a special atmosphere at the Institute of Physics which I will certainly miss. Starting with the Jean-Sébastien’s gang: Antoine, Joorn, Balazs, Michael, Rogier, Bram, Davide it was a pleasure to meet you and to work with you. Special thanks for all the great time, including also this outside the institute, go to Giuseppe, Guillaume, Rianne, Sebas, Thessa and especially to Jacopo. Jesper and Shanna thanks to you even the most miserable days of research were much more bearable. Ben, Jullia, Nick, Rens, it was really a pleasure to get to know you and to run the PhD council together. I would also like to acknowledge my deepest sympathy to all the other people that I met during these years and especially to: Johannes, Jelena, Milena, Benoit, Marco, Yocklang, Anne-Marieke, Joost, Michał and Georgy.

I would like to thank Bram, Rianne, Rogier, Sebas and Thessa for their common effort on translating the summary of the thesis.

For the quality of my life outside the institute I would like to acknowledge few people. First my amazing flatmates, Dimitris and Menelaos, with whom I have shared not only a house but also a passion for science, good food and even better music. I was also privileged to enjoy a friendship with Bartek, Radek, Beata, Klaudiusz, Sergiy, Lisa and of course Wojtek. All of them helped me many times to get back on my feet. Thank you very much.

Finally I would like to thank my family and especially my parents for their support and understanding that I could always take for granted. Even when being far from each other.
