Urban decline, urban shrinkage and population decline are afew terms which describe the transformation processes currently going on in many cities and regions throughout the world. We are beginning to understand the driving forces of these urban transformation processes – such as structural economic changes and declining birth rates – yet it is still unclear why within the same
region some cities are declining stronger than others. In this dissertation, this issue of intra-regional differentiation is
addressed in two declining former mining regions.
