IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON APPLIED SUPERCONDUCTIVITY, VOL. 28, NO. 3, APRIL 2018 0100101

MT-25 Conference Chairs’ Introduction

MT-25, the 25th International Conference on Magnet Technology, took place in the beautiful city of Amsterdam in the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands at the RAI Convention Center from August 27 to September 1, 2017. The conference was hosted by the Applied Superconductivity and Cryogenics Laboratory at the University of Twente in cooperation with the High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HFML) at Radboud University in Nijmegen.

The scope of MT-25 included magnet technology ranging from large-scale magnets for high field facilities, particle accelerators, plasma fusion, and medical magnets for MRI and radiation therapy to coil systems for energy applications such as fault current limiters, transformers, motors, and generators. In addition, all design tools, technologies, components, superconductors, and materials related to the construction of magnets were covered.

The conference started with a Welcome Reception on Sunday evening, included four regular days of presentations and concluded with technical visits on Friday. From the 1201 abstracts received, 939 presentations were selected comprising 191 regular and invited orals, 739 posters, 9 invited plenary talks, and, for the first time at an MT conference, six special short 3-minute plenary pitches by selected young scientists. The regional spread of the contributions shows 59% from Asia, 29% from Europe, 12% from America, 1% from Australia/New Zealand, and finally 0.1% from Africa. About 895 participants attended the conference from 24 countries including 179 students.

On Friday, five parallel technical visits were organized to: the High Energy Physics Laboratory, NIKHEF, in Amsterdam; the European Space Research and Technology Center in Noordwijk; Philips Healthcare MRI and the Dutch Institute for Energy Research in Eindhoven; the High Field Magnet facilities at HFML in Nijmegen; and the Applied Superconductivity and Cryogenics laboratories of the University of Twente.

The four days industrial exhibition included contributions of 49 companies, while the event was sponsored by 14 organizations. A total of 554 manuscripts were submitted for peer review and 409 of these will publish in the April 2018 special issue of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ONAPPLIEDSUPERCONDUCTIVITY (TAS). This special issue of the IEEE TAS dedicated to MT-25 was prepared with voluntary contributions provided by a team of editors and reviewers led by the Editor-in-Chief, Luisa Chiesa, of Tufts University, with management support of Centennial Conferences, Louisville, CO, USA.

A special thanks goes to Arjan Verweij, Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee, Arend Nijhuis for managing the Exhibition, and Jos Perenboom for managing the resources, and management support of the Congress Association Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. This conference could not be organized so smoothly without the support of all other local and international committee members, in particular the team of 20 assistants from the hosting institutes.

We hope your participation at the MT-25 event was a pleasant experience and fulfilled your expectations in social and scientific context.

HERMAN TENKATE, Chairman of MT-25 ANDRIES DENOUDEN, Co-Chairman of MT-25
