WereadwithgreatinteresttherecentcasereportbyGalbiati

etal.ona15-year-olddrowningvictimwithfavourableoutcome

despitealongperiodofsubmersion[1].Weapplaudtheauthors

forraisingawarenessofdrowninganditstreatment,butwere

sur-prisedthemanuscriptincludedtheterm‘nearlydrowned’.

In2003thisjournalco-publishedanadvisorystatementofthe

InternationalLiaisonCommitteeonResuscitation(ILCOR)which

recommended the use of a uniform way of reporting data on

drowning:the‘Utstein Style forDrowning’ [2].This

consensus-based document was created to provide more consistency in

describingdrowningresearchandimprovecomparabilitybetween

individualstudies.Inthisstatementdrowningwasdefinedas“a

processresultinginprimaryrespiratoryimpairmentfrom

submer-sion/immersioninaliquidmedium.Implicitinthisdefinitionis

thataliquid/airinterfaceispresentattheentranceofthevictim’s

airway,preventingthevictimfrombreathingair.Thevictimmay

liveordieafterthisprocess,butwhatevertheoutcome,heorshe

hasbeeninvolvedinadrowningincident”[2].Theuseoftheterm

‘near-drowning’,whichwasconsideredtobeconfusing,wasthus

abandoned[2].Formorethanadecadenowthis‘new’definition

ofDrowninghasbeenadoptedbytheWorldHealthOrganisation

(WHO)andithasalsobeenincorporatedintheEuropean

Resusci-tationCouncilGuidelinesforResuscitation[3,4].

Westilldonotfullyunderstandwhysomevictimssurvivea

drowningincidentwithgoodneurologicaloutcomeasdescribedin

thecurrentcasereport,whereasothersdonot.Tostudythis,more

researchisneeded.Webelievethattheuseofuniformterminology

describingdrowningincidentsisvitalforgood,qualitative

compar-isonsofdrowningresearch,andimprovingpatientoutcomes.We

thereforeurgeallauthorstodescribedrowningincidentsusingthe

terminologyadvisedbyILCORandtheWHO.
