archetypes, conceptual qualities, and spatial ambitions started to develop the transformation of the two existing buildings and the new buildings.

These architectural designs continued within the integral design approach by working on different scales. Each of them has become unique in its own conceptual foundation and the design expresses this through its powerful impact on the senses, while simultaneously keeping a balance between the old and the new through contemporary design. I am proud of the concepts, qualities and designs of Kanaal Eindhoven, because it clearly answers the research question. While designing, more and more qualities, concepts and senses will appear, asking for continuous attention and development, Kanaal Eindhoven is an unfinished work of art, that can keep on growing.

founder and creator of the urban and architectural plan of Kanaal Vervoordt

I would like to briefly add a page to the two great excursions organized by our graduation studio. The excursions were very inspirational for the project and the design process, they were fun and we have seen amazing urban and architectural qualities by visiting these projects:

Kanaal Vervoordt

In the first weeks of the graduation project we were able to visit Kanaal Vervoordt, together with Axel Vervoordt1 . This was amazing, we visited all the different buildings, art exhibitions and personal collections of the family Vervoordt, while listening to his thoughts and experiences about this transformation project. The power of this project, is in my opinion, the beautiful collaboration between art and architecture, The complementation between these two was extraordinary.

Excursion to Belgium

After a few months we organized a three-day excursion to Belgium. By car we visited different cities and architectural (transformational) projects: C-mine (Genk), Texture by NoAarchitecten (Kortrijk), Art Centre Buda by 51N4E (Kortijk), UCL-LOCI Site by Aires Mateus (Tournai), Musée du Louvre by SANAA (Lens) and FRAC Grand Large by Lacaton Vasal (Dunkerque). It was very inspirational and a lot of fun to see so many great architectural projects.

VIII. Reflection

I would like to express my gratitude to my tutors Paul, Anne-Marie and Tomas for their support and dedication for this project. Their inspiring contributions during our frequently meetings helped me to create ‘Kanaal Eindhoven. The meetings were inspiring, creative, exciting, educational but mostly fun.

They always expected more and pushed me to go beyond my own boundaries, to inspire me to broaden my perspective and knowledge. This inspirational and enthusiastic approach encouraged me to start developing my personal opinion and agenda within the work field as an architect.

I would like to thank Koen van Velsen. First of all, for the great time I experienced at his office (Koen van Velsen architecten), while being an intern. During my internship I became so excited about the real-life practice of architecture. I developed myself a lot, was able to work on amazing projects, but most of all became convinced that architecture is the profession that I want to grow in. His philosophy and design aesthetic as an architect has been of great inspiration for me. Secondly, I want to thank him for the two meetings we had during the graduation project, where I could present my graduation project and discuss it with him.

I would like to thank my parents, Sander & Christine, and my sister Maaike, for the ‘always’ support and love they give me. They taught me how to be passionate about the things I value and to never give up.

I would like to thank Roel Schiffers, for being one of my best friends and my

‘buddy/partner’ in architecture. The many, many, many meetings and phone calls helped me to reflect my ideas, to stay critical on my own project, and to stimulate myself to stay confident in my own design process.

I would like to thank CHEOPS, for offering the possibility after my bachelor to participate in a board year, for this study association. This year was an amazing period during my time as a student at TU/e, I developed myself on a lot of skills, different from the education of architecture and this stimulated me enormous to grow and become more confident of my competences.

Finally, I would like to thank all of my amazing friends (Roel, Kim, Lineke, Mathijs, Anne, Tom, Caya, Lenny, Laurens, Anouk, Melissa, Lotte, Ruth, Sebastiaan, Stan, Ties, Rikke, Emily, Rolien, Daniel and Mylene) for making my time as a student unforgettable.

You make me very happy and I hope we all stay friends for a lifetime.

And of course I want to thank our graduation studio for the groupwork, the building on the models and the fun together. Our ‘cosy’ corner at the fifth floor was never quiet or boring.

For me, this master project was an amazing journey. It makes me exciting for the next phase of my life, as an architect. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this journey.
