V10. Narrative Structure

V1: Awards

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether there are mentions in the entirety of the movie trailer of movie awards.

V1A - Code ‘yes’ if there are Film Festival or Movie Award (at least one) mentioned in the youtube clip (at least one). Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore questions V1B and V1C.

V1B - The purpose is to establish the kind of mention of the movie in relation to a Film Festival or Movie Award. The categories are not necessarily self-exhaustive and the choice of them depends on what is clearly written in text on the overtitle slide in the trailer. Choose 'yes' only if such mention appears related to the movie the trailer is referring to.

1=[presented] 2=[nominated] 3=[won] 4=[selected]

V1C - Please count the number of times these kinds of mentions appear in the trailer.

E.g.: A logo with reference to a Winning Movie at the Venice Film Festival: 1 mention.

V2: Critics

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether there are mentions in the entirety of the movie trailer of reviews made by critics published in the press.

V2A - Code ‘yes’ if there are film critics' reviews (at least one) mentioned in the youtube clip (at least one). Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore questions V2B and V2C.

V2B - Please count the number of times these kinds of mentions appear in the trailer.

E.g.: A critic’s quote taken from a review published in a newspaper: 1 mention.

V2C - The purpose is to establish the kind of evaluation given to the movie by the critic review. Code ‘yes’ if there is an evaluation portrayed graphically (e.g., stars) mentioned in the youtube clip (at least one). Code ‘no’ if there are no such representations in the video.

V3: Rating

For this variable, the aim is to detect the kind of rating the movie obtained by the MPAA (Movie Picture Association of America) film rating system or its international equivalents (if that’s the case).

V3A - Code ‘yes’ if there are acknowledgments to film ratings (at least one) in the youtube clip (at least one). Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V3B.

V3B - The purpose is to establish the kind of rating the movie has obtained by the film rating system association. Please select one of the followings:

1=[G] General audiences. All ages admitted.

2=[PG] Parental guidance suggested. Materials may not be suitable for children.

3=[PG-13] Parents strongly cautioned. Materials may be inappropriate for childrenunder 13.

5=[NC-17] No one 17 and under admitted.

6=[Other] A rating expressed by a different company than the MPAA and therefore not clear whether it falls in the aforementioned categories.

V4: Release Date

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether the release date that appears during the movie trailer (usually, towards the end of the clip) falls into a period of time considered to be close to a holiday or vacation day/period (e.g.: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter).

V4A - Code ‘yes’ if there is a movie release date specified in the trailer. Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video or if the movie release is set as "coming soon".

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V4B.

V4B - Code ‘yes’ if the release date falls into a period of time conventionally considered close to a holiday or vacation. The date clearly expresses the release of the date close to a period of time in which conventionally people tend to be on vacation, the occurrance of a long weekend or have more free time (e.g., ‘This Thanksgiving’, ‘At Christmas’). Note:

References to ‘summer’ as a release date count as a positive reference to this item. Code ‘no’

if there are no such mentions in the video.

V5: Stars

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether there are references in the entirety of the movie trailer to the names of cast members (e.g., actor, director, executive producer).

V5A - Code ‘yes’ if there are cast members' names (at least one) cited in the youtube clip (at least one). Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V5B.

V5B - The purpose is to establish whether a certain name is correlated or has a reference to a Film Festival or Movie Award - code ‘yes’ if that’s the case, for at least one. Code ‘no’ if there are no such associations in the video

V6: Studio

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether in the trailer there is a clear reference to a producing or distributing studio that falls into the category of the “Big Six” (Columbia TriStar, Disney, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros.).

V6A - Code ‘yes’ if in the trailer there is a reference to one of the “Big Six” producing or distributing cinema studios. Code ‘no’ if there are no such mentions in the video.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V6B.

V6B - The purpose is to establish which one of the “Big Six” studios is distributing or producing the movie which the trailer is promoting. Please select one of the followings:

1=[Columbia TriStar] 2=[Disney] 3=[Paramount]

4=[Twentieth Century Fox] 5=[Universal] 6=[Warner Bros.]

V7: Prior work

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether the movie the trailer is promoting is a prequel, sequel, or remake based on prior work - specifically long feature films. Movies based on books, comics, tv series, or other original works of fiction are not to be taken into account when coding for this variable.

V7A - Code ‘yes’ if the movie trailer refers to another movie previously released. Code ‘no’ if that is not the case - the movie content is an original work of fiction and not based on prior work.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V7B.

V7B - The purpose is to establish the kind of prior work the movie is based on. Please select one of the followings:

1=[prequel] 2=[sequel] 3=[remake]

V8: Effects

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether “spectacular” effects are shown throughout the length of the movie trailer. By referring to a “spectacular” effect, elements are not limited to portrayals of computer-generated content.

V8A - Code ‘yes’ if the movie trailer contains elements that can be considered as “spectacular effects” (see list in V8B). Code ‘no’ if that is not the case - the trailer presents none of those addences.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V8B.

V8B - Please select “yes” for each of the following “spectacular” effects that can be recognized in the movie trailer. Select “no” if the trailer does not show such elements.

V9A - Code ‘yes’ if the movie trailer outro shows a funny scene or joke as a final remark.

Code ‘no’ if it is not the case.

V10: Narrative

For this variable, the aim is to detect whether from a movie trailer is possible to point out a narrative structure, just as the one used in the narration of long feature films. Hereby are the four acts' main particularities explained. For this research, the possibility to encounter a

‘prologue’ or an ‘epilogue’ is not considered.

1: Setup: The characters are introduced together with their goals and the setting in which they act. This could coincide with a general presentation of the main characters.

2: Complicating Action: The protagonist’s aim is distraught and they find themselves in a new situation. May coincide with the introduction of a villain.

3: Development: An expansion of the story, sometimes through the intervention of secondary characters. A second turnaround to the first complicating action.

4: Climax: The protagonists work towards the resolution of their quest. Although a movie trailer cannot fully disclose the ending of the movie, in the trailer there is a sense of completion of the quest, finally carried out by the main character(s).

V10A - Code ‘yes’ if the movie trailer showcases one of the 4 narrative act elements. Code

‘no’ if that is not the case - such distinction(s) cannot be easily recognized by the trailer.

If you coded ‘no’, you can ignore question V10B.

V10B - The purpose is to establish which of the 4 narrative acts can be identified in a movie trailer. Please select one of the followings:

1=[Setup] 2=[Complicating action]

3=[Development] 4=[Climax]
