Die betrokke verkennende ondersoek het verskeie bydraes tot gevolg. Dit voeg nie net waarde toe ten opsigte van die uitbreiding van bestaande literatuur nie, maar dit lewer ook belangrike bydraes op ‘n teoretiese, professionele, praktiese en beleidsvlak. Teen die agtergrond van die bestaande literatuur oor veerkragtigheid, is dit die eerste studie in Suid-Afrika wat die belewing en vergestalting van veerkragtige ouerskap in die konteks van ouers van kinders met ATHV in hulle middelkinderjare ondersoek. So byvoorbeeld het verskeie deelnemers hulle belewing binne die konteks van lae sosio-ekonomiese omstandighede, wat ‘n realiteit binne Suid-Afrika is, meegedeel. Op hierdie wyse lewer die navorsing ook ‘n unieke bydrae tot die literatuur in terme van veerkragtige ouerskap rakende ‘n kind met ATHV binne die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks. Ouers van kinders met ATHV in hulle middelkinderjare kan nou hierdie studie raadpleeg om meer te wete te kom aangaande die bepalers wat bygedra het tot die bevordering van die veerkragtigheid van ander ouers in ‘n soortgelyke posisie.

Op ‘n teoretiese vlak het hierdie ondersoek betekenisvolle bydraes gelewer. Die bepalers van veerkragtigheid is binne die raamwerk van die bekwaamheidsteorie (―capability theory‖) uiteengesit en verduidelik. Dit is gedoen in ‘n poging om ‘n greep uit die belewing van ouers van kinders met ATHV, asook die vergestalting van veerkragtige ouerskap binne hierdie konteks, te verduidelik. Hierdie diagrammatiese voorstelling daarvan bied ‘n samevatting van die hulpbronne, individuele en sosiale bepalers van veerkragtigheid, sowel as oorsaaklikheidsfaktore wat die dinamika tussen hierdie faktore in die bevordering van veerkragtigheid insluit. Hindernisse tot die vergestalting van veerkragtigheid is ook binne die bogenoemde teoretiese raamwerk uiteengesit. Dit op sigself lewer ‘n belangrike bydrae tot die literatuur, aangesien dit onder andere ‘n grondslag bied vir aanbevelings vir die bevordering van veerkragtigheid by ouers van kinders met ATHV in hulle middelkinderjare. ‘n Verdere bydrae is op ‘n professioneel-praktiese vlak en verwys na die waarde wat die betrokke navorsing aan die vakgebied van opvoedkundige sielkunde, sowel as met betrekking tot die onderwysstelsel (Departement van Basiese Onderwys 2014; 2001) toevoeg. Hierdie navorsing gee byvoorbeeld erkenning aan die unieke belewing van die teikengroep. Op hierdie wyse lewer dit ook ‘n bydrae tot die ontwikkeling van ouers van kinders met ATHV se kennis oor die algemene belewing van ander ouers van kinders met hierdie toestand. Die navorsingstudie is ook waardevol in terme van terapeutiese ingryping by sulke ouers. Binne hierdie konteks kan die bepalers tot die vergestalting van veerkragtige ouerskap, soos dit in die betrokke navorsing geïdentifiseer is, as ‘n vertrekpunt vir terapeutiese ingryping en ouerleiding dien. Die betrokke navorsing lewer ook verskeie voorstelle vir die wyses waarop skole, oftewel die onderwyserkorps, ouers kan ondersteun en akkommodeer ten opsigte van hulle kinders se behoeftes. In terme van bydraes op grond van beleidsvlak mag onderwysers en ander ondersteuningspersoneel dit van waarde vind wanneer die SIAS gebruik word vir die assessering en beplanning van ingryping ten opsigte van kinders met ATHV.

Samevattend het hierdie navorsing verskeie aspekte aan die lig gebring wat belangrik in ouers se belewing van ‘n kind met ATHV in sy of haar middelkinderjare is. Op grond hiervan is individuele, sowel as sosiale bepalers in die vergestalting van veerkragtige ouerskap geïdentifiseer. Uit die bevindinge het dit duidelik geword dat veerkragtigheid, soos dit in Ungar (2008) en Theron (2010) se navorsing gestipuleer is en dit in die lig van die bekwaamheidsteorie as raamwerk vir hierdie studie gebruik is, ‘n interaktiewe proses tussen

individuele en sosiale faktore is en dat veerkragtigheid daarom ook inderdaad as ‘n sosiale konstruk beskou kan word. Dit was ook uit die deelnemers se terugvoer duidelik dat veerkragtigheid nie ‘n hindernisvrye toestand of selfs die afwesigheid van uitdagings impliseer nie, maar eerder die hantering daarvan te midde van hindernisse.

Modesto-Lowe, Yelunina en Hanjan (2011) verduidelik dat ATHV uitdagings bied op kliniese, akademiese en sosiale gebiede, maar dat party kinders met hierdie toestand tog ook goed funksionerend is. Alhoewel daar konsensus in die literatuur is oor die sterk genetiese komponent van ATHV, is dit ook duidelik dat die insette van ouers en ander omgewingsfaktore die lewe met hierdie toestand positief kan beïnvloed. Die literatuur dui op positiewe resultate rakende die gebruik van medikasie vir ATHV indien dit korrek voorgeskryf word, veral in terme van akademiese prestasie, sosiale funksionering en lewensgehalte. Die versterking van ondersteuning deur familie, sowel as toegang tot gesondheids- en onderwyshulpbronne kan ook ‘n positiewe bydrae rakende lewensgehalte lewer. Hierdie veerkragtigheidsbenadering van Modesto-Lowe e.a. (2011) strook dus met die bekwaamheidsteorie in terme van die belangrike bydrae van individuele sowel as sosiale faktore.

Uit die navorsing het dit aan die lig gekom dat die samelewing se onkunde aangaande ATHV moontlik as die grootste hindernis tot die vergestalting van veerkragtige ouerskap binne hierdie konteks beskou kan word. Die betoog, na aanleiding van hierdie studie, is dat bewusmaking van ATHV as toestand die samelewing kan bemagtig met kennis om ouers se belewing daarvan beter te verstaan. Dit kan lei tot ‘n toename in die ondersteuning wat aan hierdie ouers gebied word, en sodoende ook moontlik tot die bevordering van die veerkragtigheid van hierdie ouers bydra. Daarom word daar aangevoer dat dit elke ouer van ‘n kind met ATHV, maar ook die breër bevolking, se verantwoordelikheid is om hulself te bemagtig met kennis van ATHV en vervolgens bewusmaking te bevorder. Hierdie oortuiging word saamgevat in ‘n aanhaling van Helen Keller: ―The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of tiny pushes of each honest worker.‖
