Wegwijzer 5: Blijf werken aan actualisatie van theorieën
Veel vermelde theorieën in de databank hebben, evenals sociale theorieën uit de literatuur, een vroege oorsprong. Dat maakt enerzijds dat de bouwstenen van bepaalde theoretische stromingen nu vaak als vanzelfsprekend of zelf-evident lezen.
Anderzijds maakt het dat ze soms wat gedateerd overkomen omdat de tijden ver-anderd zijn of theoretische noties zijn ingehaald door de wetenschap. Dat wil niet zeggen dat ‘oude’ theorieën ook automatisch ‘verouderd’ zijn. Soms kan het zelfs nuttig zijn ze af te stoffen. Het laat echter onverlet dat de samenleving voortdurend aan verandering onderhevig is. Kortom: of een sociale theorie adequaat is, hangt voor een belangrijk deel af van de centrale (tijds)problematiek waarmee de theorie zich engageert. Ook sociale theorievorming is een dynamisch proces dat zo nu en dan actualisatie behoeft. In die actualisering zit ook de stap naar wetenschappelijke toetsing van theorieën en dus wetenschappelijke onderbouwing. Om de houdbaar-heidsdatum van theorieën te bepalen, blijft immers gedegen empirisch onderzoek naar de adequaatheid van die theorieën noodzakelijk.
