Geachte Heer Sala!
Ge maakt „t me erg lastig met uw schrijven en de wijze waarop. Gij weet dat ik ontzettend veel aan zenuwpijnen lijd en massa‟s menschen mij allerlei soorten advies komen vragen. Gij schijnt net als heel vele menschen in de wereld geen geduld te hebben. Zij die echter een mooie teekeningetje van mij willen hebben, zij hebben geduld.
Gij moet dus een beetje meer geduld hebben.
Er zijn toestanden, die geholpen moeten worden met teekeningen, die ik beloofd heb. Deze toestanden, en het zijn er vele, hebben „t brood nodig.
Leer wat geduld, beste kerel en over vier à vijf weken krijgt gij zeer zeker een teekeningetje om die zaak van de Heilige Familie reproduktie af te handelen. Ik ben geen fabriek die teekeningen afdrukt. Tot over vijf weken dus.

De menschen vragen mij in Holland hier en daar of mijne tentoonstelling door is gegaan of niet in Arnhem. Men schijnt dit dus niet te weten, ook de verschillende bezitters der werken hooren niets van de tentoonstelling. Wilt U er misschien naar de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant een kort berichtje heen zenden [sic] of Mej. Perk; want iedereen leest hier en daar de Rotterdamsche en men hoort niets geen nieuws uit [het] Arnhemsche Kunst en Kennis. Een klein bericht voor Kunst en Letteren zouden [sic] de verschillende bezitters der werken een beetje gerust stellen en aangenaam stemmen. Bijvoorbeeld dat de tentoonstelling reeds veertien dagen open is geweest voor de Arnhemsche publiek [sic] en dat de verschillende werken die de bezitters er van welwillend daarvoor hebben afgestaan buitengewoon succes hebben en het bezoek zooals U zegt verbazend druk is en iets zeer ongemeen[s] voor Arnhem (niet noodig te zeggen [het] aantal bezoekers). Daarbij kunt U ook melden dat het
levensgroote portret van mevrouw de douairière van Zuijlen van Nyevelt zeer bewonderd wordt (of zoo iets), ook „de zaaier‟, de‘Zielengang langs den Oceaan‟ en Walt
Whitman‟s 'I sit and look out’. De verschillende stemmingen van de zee bij regen, storm, zon, wind en mist en de kinderportretten trokken bijzonder de aandacht, vooral het Rijnkanaaltje en de Schelpenvisschers bij stil en mistig weer, tevens (rood en : geel) koperdrijfwerk voor haarddeuren door Toorop zelf gedreven en de koperen gaslamp met drie armen door een Katwijkschen man Burgerhout vervaardigd die hij het drijven geleerd heeft en waar Toorop het ontwerp en de teekening van heeft gemaakt. „Moeder met kinderen‟ en de gepointilleerde portretten van „mevrouw Bouman‟ en „dr. Timmerman‟ wekte nogal heel veel discussie op. Dan zijn nog eenige etsen door hem zelf afgedrukt en een paar litho‟s. De tentoonstelling blijft nog tot einde dezer maand open en zal daarna met een groot nieuw doek dat thans nog op zijn atelier te Katwijk aan/zee staat en nog eenige andere werken in de Rotterdamsche Kunstkring geëxposeerd worden.
Deze korte beschrijving en niet meer s.v.p. moet U maar zoo spoedig mogelijk in de Rotterdammer laten zenden [sic]. Mej. Perk zal dit wel corrigeeren.
Het is zoo vervelend, maar iedereen vraagt me, hoe gaat het in Arnhem. Is het al open of is er niets? Het is maar om de menschen, vooral de bezitters der werken tevreden te stellen,

en waarom niet. Ik heb toch reeds zo‟n last deze dingen van hen te leenen. U moet dit briefje maar na het drukken verscheuren; anders denkt men dat ik mijn eigen kritieken schrijf.226

2° Aucune autre oeuvre que celle que nous vous ferons parvenir n‟y figurera.
3° Deux délégués des XX auront accès au Panorama pendant le placement, pour diriger celui- ci. Nous avons désigné à cet effet MM. Jan Toorop et Guillaume Vogels, qui se rendront à Amsterdam du 18 au 20 c[ourant]t.
4° Aussitôt après la fermeture de l‟exposition dont la durée sera d‟un mois les oeuvres qui y auront figuré, à l‟exception de celles qui auront trouvé acquéreur seront envoyées à M. Mommen, rue de la Charité à Bruxelles soigneusement emballées dans leurs caisses.
5° L‟association des XX n‟aura pas d‟autres frais à supporter que le retour des oeuvres d‟Amsterdam à Bruxelles.
Il est également entendu, conformément à votre demande, que sur toutes les ventes, la Société du Panorama percevra une commission de 10%. Le prix des tableaux vendus sera transmis, sous déduction de cette commission, au secrétariat des XX à Bruxelles, dans la huitaine qui suivra la clôture de l‟exposition.
Si comme je le suppose, nous sommes d‟accord sur ces points, nous vous expédierons les oeuvres de Bruxelles vers le 12 c[ourant]t pour qu‟elles vous arrivent en temps utile.

Art.I. Les tableaux et autres objets d‟art destinés à l‟exposition de La Haye seront expédiés, convenablement encadrés, à l‟adresse de Mr Wertheim, qui supportera les frais de transport, et qui les renverra, également, à ses frais, après la clôture de l‟exposition, à Bruxelles, à l‟adresse qui lui sera indiquée par le secrétaire des XX.
Art.II. Les caisses contenant les tableaux et objets d‟art doivent être très solides et vissées. Chacune d‟elles renfermera le nom et l‟adresse de l‟artiste dont les oeuvres y seront contenues.
Art.III. M.Wertheim ne répondra pas des accidents qui pourraient arriver aux oeuvres envoyées, soit pendant le transport, soit pendant la durée de l‟exposition, sauf dans le cas où ces accidents surviendraient par suite d‟un manque de précaution ou d‟un défaut de surveillance de sa part.
Art.IV. Il sera tenu de faire assurer lesdits tableaux et objets d‟art en proportion de la valeur qui leur sera attribuée par les exposants dans l‟indication de leur prix de vente.
Art.V. Après l‟exposition de La Haye, des expositions semblables pourront être faites dans d‟autres villes désignées de commun accord si M. Wertheim en reçoit l‟autorisation écrite, signée par le secrétaire des XX.
Art.VI. L‟organisation des expositions est laissée tout entière aux soins de M.Wertheim, qui en fixera la durée, sans que celle-ci puisse dépasser trois mois.
Art.VII. Il est expressément interdit à M. Wertheim d‟exposer en même temps que les oeuvres qui lui seront envoyées par les membres de l‟association des XX aucun tableau ou oeuvre d‟art quelconque.
Art.VIII. Les frais de transport, y compris ceux dont il est parlé à l‟art.I, de location de salle, d‟assurances, de voyages, de personnel, d‟affiches, d‟annonces, de catalogues et d‟emballage seront déduits des recettes que produiront les entrées à l‟exposition. Le solde constituant le bénéfice net sera partagé par moitié entre M.Wertheim et l‟association des XX. Dans le cas, et quel que soit le résultat de l‟exposition, il ne pourra rien être réclamé aux exposants de quelque chef que ce soit. M.Wertheim s‟engageant à supporter seul le déficit si l‟entreprise solde en perte.
Art.IX. Les artistes exposants auront le droit toutes les fois qu‟ils le jugeront utile, de faire vérifier par le secrétaire des XX <spécialement désigné à cet effet: barré> l‟état de dépenses et de recettes de l‟exposition et de faire contrôler la gestion de M. Wertheim. Le secrétaire des XX pourra se substituer à cet effet tel mandataire qu‟il lui plaira de désigner, sans qu‟il puisse être exigé du dit mandataire d‟autres justifications qu‟une procuration sur papier libre, signée
80 du secrétaire des XX.
Art.X. Les exposants fixeront les prix auxquels ils consentent à céder les oeuvres d‟art qu‟ils auront envoyées à M.Wertheim. Ce dernier percevra sur les ventes une commission de 15%. Les oeuvres vendues ne pourront pas être retirées avant la clôture de l‟exposition.
Art.XI. Dans les huit jours qui suivront la clôture de l‟exposition, M.Wertheim adressera au secrétariat des XX un état de recettes et de dépenses, ainsi que la liste des tableaux et objets d‟art vendus. Le montant des bénéfices attribués à l‟association des XX, ainsi qu‟il est dit à l‟art.VIII et le prix résultant des ventes ce dernier sous déduction de la commission dont il a été parlé à l‟art.X, sera transmis dans le même délai au secrétariat des XX.
Art.XII. En garantie de la bonne et fidèle exécution des obligations contractées par Mr Wertheim, Mr [espace], qui signe la présente convention, après avoir pris connaissance de toutes les clauses qui précèdent, déclare se porter caution solidaire et répondre avec MrWertheim des conséquences dommageables pour les exposants que pourraient entraîner l‟inexécution ou la mauvaise exécution de ses engagements.
Art.XIII. Toutes les difficultés que pourrait faire naître la présente convention seront résolues par un arbitre choisi par M. le président du tribunal civil de Bruxelles parmi les avocats inscrits au tableau de l‟ordre. Cet arbitre jugera du dernier ressort et sa sentence sera, sans autres formalités, exécutoire en Hollande si la législation de ce pays n‟y fait pas obstacle.
