PMy experiences in the last few years broadened my perception of the world I live in. I learned how beautiful life can be if I allow myself to be creative and how painful it can be as it is at the same time. It is very hard to feel the beauty of life without having people who see you, who talk, laugh, and cry with you, who teach you, and whom you teach. This section expresses my gratitude to those whose presence is the essence of beauty in my life. In my view, the world has not much to say without such people:

Jan Anton, yousupportedmethroughoutthelastsevenyearsandallowedmetolearn

and develop, both as a person and as a researcher in your group. Once during lunchtime in the third year of my PhD, you introduced a topic that I liked a lot and soon began work-ing on, which ultimately turned out to be the startwork-ing point of my most favorite chapters of this thesis. Overall, doing a PhD is not a very smooth journey, which is not surprising, as any improvement can be painful; and, you helped me face the pain, tackle the prob-lems, and improve, with a big smile from the bottom of my heart. I will remember to "keep the balls rolling" in any situation and to focus on my goals, even if I see obstacles, even if I have less hope. Indeed, the most important output of a PhD life is beyond pub-lishing scientific papers. I am so delighted to carry this output with strength throughout the rest of my life: becoming a better person. Thank you.

I would like to acknowledge my second promoter, Maria, for all her support. Maria, thanks for the energy you always pumped in the POE group, for the unforgettable group dinners, and for all the memorable group activities we had. Also, thank you for your en-couraging words in your feedback on my thesis.

I sincerely thank the assessment committee of my thesis, prof. P. Rudolf, prof. R.M.

Hildner, and prof. N. Stingelin, for proofreading my thesis, their constructive

sugges-tions and feedbacks.

Petra, Casper, and Tamalika, I am very thankful for your heart-warming words

dur-ing my illness. It is hard to describe how much it meant to me to have your support.

Solmaz and Sylvia, I am thankful to you for being my paranymphs and for helping me

with the preparations. At the stage of writing these lines, I still hope that all the three of us can walk into the Aula together for the defense ceremony. Well, as the Persian proverb

104 Acknowledgments says: "Aspiration is not a defect for youngsters!".

Solmaz,

youwerethefirstpersonwithwhomIwasconnectedbeforecomingtoGronin-gen, and soon after, you became the last one I could have imagined to be disconnected from. Sharing thoughts with you felt like having a cup of tea in winter in a safe and warm place. Thank you for having each other’s back while passing through uneasy stages in our lives and creating such a lasting friendship together. I wish you and Bart all the best and joyful moments in life. Bart, chakkeram! :D

Sylvia, your active attitude, approachability, and warm character can transform

any-where you step in into a friendlier place. Thanks for our collaboration on the stability study, which turned out to be my most favorite study during my PhD. Our walk during the summer was so nice, and thanks for showing us a mountain in Groningen! :D I wish you a smooth and joyful 4th year of PhD.

It is so relaxing to have a friend who, despite all her dedication to research, is right there for you at any moment you need help. Talieh, thanks for all your support and friendship. I deeply believe you deserve all the bests in life, which I am sure you always achieve.

Samaneh, we have spent pleasant and fruitful moments together, during the warm

and delicious breakfasts at your place, in an amusement park, while reading a book on the beautiful yellow sofa in Van der Velde Boeken, on a rainy night in the street, and in every time you visit us in Groningen. Thanks for standing with such a strong color in my mind.

Maryam, Ghazaleh, Taraneh and Ali, thank you for your exceptional supports

dur-ing my trips to Amsterdam. You moved the borders of kindness beyond the limits.

Saide, Mohamadreza, Nima, Shaghayegh, Pooya, Neda, Babak, and Maryam, my

little lovely family! Thanks for all the good memories you planted in my mind, and the smiles you planted in my eyes. Calling the string of your names is so relaxing and exciting!

Saide, your own fun way of honesty and frankness, builds up lots of joy and trust. An

example is asking me not to forget to mention you in the acknowledgments! :) And how possibly could I forget? Mohamadreza, you are like your homemade pizzas: warm and colorful, or like that fresh bread from “eigen deeg” that you brought to our house to share a smile! I enjoy every moment of sitting around your table and speaking our minds loudly about literally everything while having delicious foods. Watching the best Korean movies without you two is pointless. Shaghayegh, thanks for your wonderful cakes, especially the eaters choice: "chocolate cake of Bibi"! :) You always bring interesting topics and ideas to the table. Nima, you always create pleasant moments when you play guitar, whether playing classical pieces or the ones we can sing along. Our group games turn out to be full of laughter when you two are present. Let’s always stay as Bereners! Pooya, you always encourage me to write more. Despite me being lazy or whatever :D, I appreciate your feedback on my occasional notes! Neda, you are like the warm ginger tea you made in cold weather to make me feel better. I am happy that we still keep in touch, and I can’t wait to see the four of us dancing together some-time soon, with health and happiness! :) Laaya, my dear friend, even though I met you less often than I wished, it always gave me a safe feeling that you were living close by, and we spent a great time together. Soheil and Zahra, I look forward to having a delicious homemade Bandari together!

I look for-ward to seeing you and Miranda again sometime soon. Ali, thanks for all the kindness you spread among your friends. I wish you and Tara all the bests. Vida and Amir, I al-ways admire your energy, playfulness, and your beautiful artworks. Setareh, the first time I met you was years ago in Pooria’s place, you playing melodica, and Pooria playing daf. You create such a nice atmosphere wherever you are present. I wish you all the bests in your life. Marjan and Mohammad, we have had pleasant conversations and a joyful time at your place. I hope we can meet again soon. Omid, you have always been a caring

was with you, and what a memorable time we spent together either in the top master study room or in each other’s places. I was so lucky to meet you all, and I have already missed our old times. I wish you all the bests. Jing, you were my first non-Iranian friend, who always posed questions and made me think deeper, and I loved it. Thanks for being my let’s-do-some-exercise-together friend at my laziest, and for being my quick-quick friend when apparently I was not fast enough for you! :) I miss you so much and I hope life brings us together again. ac-108 Acknowledgments tive, warm, and as Dutch say: "gezellig". Farzaneh, you are the most long-lasting "purple sound", which I love to hear forever. You have no idea how much I enjoy it when I remem-ber your voice and laughter by recalling the nice memories we have created together at our young age. Together, we have shared lots of funny and suffering moments. Thanks for growing together and still supporting each other in any way we can. Guilnaz, the first time we met, I saw you by accident while walking in the university to start exploring its different corners. I don’t remember what else I found but you on that day. We had fruitful discussions about almost everything while walking around different corners of life. Your lovely and lively character always pumps energy, and I never forget the non-repeatable birthday surprises we had every year, including a day I opened the door of my room in Groningen and saw you. God knows when comes the next! :D Asieh, thanks for such care you provided from far away during my treatments, and during our many years of friend-ship. It was so nice to meet you in Iran after several years, walk around the lake for hours, and chat. I wish you, Rouzbeh, and Moka great moments together. Zahra, you always fol-lowed your dreams. I am very happy that you are in a status that you pictured years ago. I wish you, Farhad, and Kian all the bests, as you have now in your life. Nazila and Natela, you are the oldest friends of Elnaz and me. I remember our babyhood/childhood mo-ments playing together, designing competitions, live performances every spring, laugh-ing until we cry, plannlaugh-ing our special trip to Shomal, learnlaugh-ing the Georgian alphabet from you, and the list goes on and on. Mehrzad, I will never forget the days you woke me up very early in the morning to go to university, to sit under a tree, and to solve the problems of electricity and magnetism. You have an attractive magnetic field around you. It brings me a smile when remembering our fun moments in the lectures where I couldn’t keep myself from laughing, and you hesitated to sit next to me because of this!

Madar, within all the busy life these days, it is so relaxing to be always reminded that

you are there for us. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Elnaz, my beautiful Aji, our friendship started way before we can remember: the first

Roozbeh, you are a great Doomad!

Maman and Baba joonam, thanks for protecting me and keeping me away from all

the bitter realities of the world I came into, as far as you could. I cannot start to imagine how hard it was for you to provide such support in all the seasons of your life. Maman, with the most beautiful dresses you made with love and the most delicious foods you cooked for us, and Baba, with all your support, I learned what the real wealth is: to have you by my side. You supported and encouraged me to try any activity I wanted to in parallel to my studies. Thanks for always believing in me, staying ahead of the time and place you were living in, and for shaping my definition of unconditional love.
