Acknowledgments

The studies and work that were done to produce this dissertation would not be possible without the support, help, and inspiration from a lot of people. It always looks from the outside that the process was smooth and without hiccups. I did enjoy the process, but throughout the years that the studies in here were conducted and written up, there were moments of frustration, anxiety, and stress. I always had the opportunity to talk about this and I am grateful for the warm, positive, and loving people that I have around me that continually support and believe in me.

Monicque, thank you for everything. We started this project together and I am excited to continue exploring ideas. Marty, I had an amazing time in your lab at Duke university. I am still amazed by your sharp eye, “when something looks funny, something is wrong in the data”. I am excited to keep learning from you and finally discover if everything is really attention. Andre, thank you for always supporting and believing in me.

I want to thank the people from the Woldorff lab. Marissa, Joe and Sarah, you were there when I arrived in Durham, thank you for helping me find my way. Ken, thank you. They say, the Woldorff lab could exist without Marty, but the Woldorff lab could not exist without Ken. The awesome people at the center of cognitive neuroscience at Duke inspired me and helped me learn how to conduct neuroscience.

To my colleagues and friends from the Groningen experimental psychology department, social psychology department and the neuroimaging center: thanks for all the help and working together over the years. All the discussions and social networking at the Minnaar are great fun. I especially want to thank my officemates Marlon and Sanne. Working with you is always really fun and inspiring!

I feel blessed to have so many warm friends around me that supported me and with whom I had time to relax and enjoy life. Florian, we started our bachelor’s together and now we both have a PhD. I am grateful to have such an awesome person around me! I want to thank the people that I have been climbing with throughout the years. I think back to the many trips to climbing places around the world where we talked late into the night, ate good food, and crushed hard routes (learning to fly!). A big hug to Jonathan, Gar, Ben, Charlie, thanks dewds, love you guys (DuR-HAM-BuLLS)! These shenanigans continued in the ueber group; Aafke, nico, Darya, Florian, Kim, Rob, Lowie, and Susie. Aytaç, Rob, Marlon, Sanne, nadine, Tassos, thanks for your friendship and all the fun evenings.

Papa, Mama en Jessica, dank jullie voor alle steun. Er zijn geen woorden voor om te beschrijven hoeveel jullie steun mij geholpen heeft om de stappen te nemen die ik heb genomen. Susie, thank you for your love and support. I am excited to experience our next steps in science and life. Fery, who is a good boy!? Wraf!
