I fly back in time to the 28th of September 2016. I still clearly remember that it was a sunny

and cold morning, the only sunny day that month. When I arrived in Groningen, I was full of curiosity about the strange city and the friendly people. Time flies and now it will come to an end. Happy times are always short. These years have been the best time in my life and I want to thank everyone I have met here.

Firstly, I would like to thank my supervisor Syuzi for giving me the opportunity to do my PhD in her group. I appreciate that you have always been very patient with me, especially on revising my papers. I really thank you for supporting me with loads of baby stuff when you heard I would have a baby. I feel very lucky to have worked in your group and if it wasn’t for you, I would not have had these nice papers. I have learnt a lot of things from you which will be very useful for my future studies.

I want to thank Pieter, Johan, Theodora and Monique for the help with NMR, HRMS, HPLC and GC-MS. Annete, I would like to thank you for the secretarial support. You are a very kind woman always with a smile on your face.

I also wish to express my acknowledgement to the 2nd promotor Prof. Katalin Barta and to

the members of assessment committee: Prof. Gerard Roelfes, Prof. Floris Rutjes and prof. Jan van Maarseven for reading and approving this thesis.

Also, I want to thank my former colleagues. Xingchen, from my first day in the group, you took me to Syuzi and took me shopping for a lab coat and other chemicals. You taught me a lot in the lab, such as how to start an experiment, how to use HPLC and GC, and of course how to order Chinese food at lunch time. I still remember your best dish is tomatoes with eggs and the times we worked together in the weekends. Now, you are going to start your research in China. Good luck to you. Juanfer, I don’t know where you are, maybe in Spain. Thanks for your help at the beginning of my PhD. I remembered you helped me to apply for my university card and taught me how to use and analyze NMR. You and your girlfriend Mamen, both are very knowledgeable and easy-going people. Ravi, thanks for teaching me the safety rules in the lab. You are a humorous man and we all like you. Beautiful Tilde, Francesco and Simone, thanks for teaching me Italian in the lab, even though most of what I learnt were bad words. During this time, I supervised a student, Johanan Kootstra. You are one of the cleverest students in our lab. You learnt everything very fast and with good quality. Thank you for your help in this thesis. Sevak, I will not forget the times we had lunch together. Hope you are doing well in Armenia.

Of course, I’d like to thank all my current colleagues. Marta, thanks for your great contribution to chapter 3. Luo, I feel very happy to work together with you in the lab and I cannot forget the travels we had together with Beibei, Yongzhuang to Paris, Switzerland and Germany. Kirill, I learnt lots of thing form you in the lab. You are a very skilled chemist. For me, the happiest moment in our group is the basketball night every Wednesday with all of you (Marieke, Matthijs, Roxana, Cosimo, Ning, Luo, Mercedes, Tizian and Johanan). Thank Matthijs and Johanan for translating the Dutch summary. Also, thanks for the new friends in our group, Esther, Beatrice, Rebeca, Aman, Siriphong and Aitor. Your arrival has made our lab more active.

The best time in Groningen was to have hot pot and BBQ with my friends. Thank you guys, Chengtao Ji, Xingchen, Luo, Yuzhen Qin, Shanshan Ge, Mingming Shi.

Finally, and foremost I wish to thank the most important person in my life, my wife Jiuling Li. Thanks for your company, understanding and support in the past seven years. I still remembered the first time I met you in Kunming. From that time, I know you are the person that I have always been looking for, you are the person I need to love all my life. Thanks for coming to Groningen. Without your help in my life, I wouldn’t have managed to finish this thesis on time. Thanks for our pretty daughter, her coming makes our life happier.

Sincerely, Yafei
