Propositions (Stellingen)

1. Reduction forceps make life of surgeons easier and have a positive influence on outcomes of mandibular fracture treatment (this thesis).

2. There still is lack of proof that locking fixation is superior to non-locking fixation (this thesis).

3. Quality of systematic reviews regarding locking versus non locking plates in mandibular fracture treatment is poor (this thesis).

4. The Groningen protocol for treatment of fractures of the edentulous mandible is based on the best evidence found in the literature which is not the same as that it provides the best treatment for the individual case (this thesis).

5. 3D based diagnosis of fractures of the condylar process of the mandible is by far more precise than a diagnosis based on 2D imaging but it is still uncertain that it will result in a better treatment outcome (this thesis).

6. A diagnosis may be very precise, but completely useless. 7. Statistical significance is not the same as clinical relevance.

8. A multidisciplinary approach to medical problems almost certainly will lead to a better solution (Personal experience in Groningen).

9.

A good balance between work and private life is the best to way keep you passionate (Personal experience in the Netherlands).

10. Open disagreement is far more rewarding than silent acceptance (Akash Sharma). 11. It is easier to catch an escaped horse than to take back an escaped word ( Mongolian

proverb).

12. A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning
