This thesis describes the results of research performed within the Knowledge Guided Image Processing (KGB) section of the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Image Processing (LKEB), under the supervision of Prof. dr. ir. J.H.C. Reiber, at the Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands.

This work would not have been possible without the help from many people, to whom I would like to express my most sincere gratitude.
