Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

December 15 – December 21, 2011

No rainfall in northern Haiti continues to worsen moisture deficits in December.

During the last seven days, little to no precipitation was observed throughout Hispaniola. The highest seven day rainfall amounts (5- 10 mm) were received throughout some local areas in the southern peninsula and in the Nord-Ouest department. In the last 30 days, negative rainfall anomalies range between 25-50mm across much of the country with larger negative anomalies (50-100mm) observed in central and northern portions of Haiti. Precipitation forecasts suggest a continuation of dryness into mid-December with minimal amounts of rainfall expected in the south and no rains expected for many interior parts of the country. The suppression of rainfall is expected to worsen dryness and negatively impact crops planted in northern Haiti.
