NWO news update for the

Nano, Quantum and Materials Physics

research community

Publication date: November 12, 2020

Information from the Committee Meeting

The advisory committee for the Nano, Quantum and Materials Physics research community wants to be in close contact with its research community. To this end, the committee finds it pivotal to update the research community on topics discussed during the last committee meeting (9 October). Therefore the committee circulates this second NQMP news update. Please feel free to ask for more details via your local committee member or contact Merijn Blaakmeer, secretary of the NQMP advisory committee.

Second term for Femius Koenderink and Harold Zandvliet (link)

The NQMP committee is very pleased that both Femius Koenderink (AMOLF/UvA) and Harold Zandvliet (UT) have accepted a second term as committee members. They will be installed for three years. The committee also received open nominations for new committee members. As the NQMP is still a relatively ‘young’

committee, with most members serving less than two years, the committee at this stage prefers continuity.

When future openings in the committee will become available, this will be announced in forthcoming news updates.

New chair and new members Round Table Physics (link)

Kees Storm (TU/e) has been appointed chairman of the Physics Round Table. He is succeeding Gijsje

Koenderink (TU Delft), who will continue as a member of this advisory round table. Alongside this change, the Round Table has also been looking for a new members. A call for nominations was send out before summer.

The NQMP committee very much appreciated this open process for new members and the committee wants to stress the importance of sending in nominations in the future.

Network event Physics@Veldhoven (link)

The NQMP committee wants to meet the community! Physics@Veldhoven will be organized as a digital conference, as a result spontaneous encounters in the corridors of the Koningshof are not possible this edition. Therefore, the committee will host an online get together.

The NQMP committee wants to make sure that issues and concerns of the community reach the Round Table Physics. So, please let us know what you would like to discuss in this community meeting by sending a message to ResearchCommunity-NQMP@nwo.nl.

Funding for cleanrooms

The NQMP committee is concerned about the structural lack of funding for cleanrooms. The committee has shared this concerns with the Round Table, to discuss it in a broader perspective.

New Names NWO Open Competition (link)

ENW KLEIN and ENW GROOT have undergone a few changes and will continue under the name ENW-M and ENW-XL. In the Open Competition researchers can apply for curiosity-driven, fundamental research.

- ENW-M is continuously open for applications. The former KLEIN-0 will continue in OC ENW-M under the name M-invest. In M-invest the assessment will be focused on scientific quality and scientific or societal impact and it will be assessed in competition with M-1 and M-2 (former KLEIN-1 and KLEIN-2).

- In ENW-XL consortia of researchers create added value compared to separate smaller projects, such as ENW- M grants. The deadline for pre-proposals is April 15.
