For me, the experience of doing a PhD is like a long-distance running. The start of this race is exciting. Then I got frustration and felt tired. Fortunately, I calmed down and went forward step by step. When I look back at my PhD journey, I feel so lucky and grateful that I was never alone on the way. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to remember this journey, more importantly, to express my gratitude.

Firstly, I would like to thank my supervisors: Prof. Barbro Melgert,Prof. Gerrit

Poelarends and Prof. Peter Olinga. Thank you not only for the opportunity to start

my PhD, but also for your patience, encouragement, and support all the way through.

Barbro, I feel so lucky to be your PhD student. In the past four and half years, we

had so many meetings and talks. These interactions shaped my mind on both life and science. As a researcher, you are highly passionate on studying reallife-related topics. What you inspired me a lot is that you bring questions from daily life into the lab, which subsequently provides you new insights into our life. Of course, involvement of daily issues in research never compromises your strictness on the quality of work. Your rigorousness on the number of repeats and statistics in preparation for my first manuscript surprised me. But I know what I learn from it will definitely benefit my career. Besides, you always motivate me to break the boundaries set by myself. My milestones like giving my first oral presentation on the international conference and writing my first manuscript would come much later without your encouragement. Most importantly, you never just simply pushed me into these new things. When I came close to stress, you were always there to help me or suggest me to have a vacation. Your considerateness and openness always make me feel safe and calm. So, I was so excited when you offered me a postdoc position. I really appreciate your trust and I believe we will have good cooperation continuously. Here, I wish you enjoy your life, your science, and the combination.

Gerrit, do you know how many times I was amazed by the broadness of your

knowledge and your critical thinking? Until now, I still can not believe that my second supervisor, whose research is focused on using the enzyme to catalyze chemistry reactions, provided me so many inspirations and valuable suggestions for my project on studying functions of MIF in lung disease. I often imagined how you can talk about “Michael addition reaction” in this minute and then start to discuss “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” two minutes later. Of course, I know it is because of your curiosity and your constant learning. More importantly, you can balance critical

leader. And I know I can never reach your level of presenting, thinking and leading. But I am happy I at least have a direction. I wish you can keep healthy, and keep on inspiring people.

Peter, as you are my third supervisor, I know you are always there when I need help.

Thanks for your presence on these key points of my PhD progress.

Next, I thank the assessment committee members of my thesis: Prof. Jürgen

Bernhagen, Prof. Silke Meiners, and Prof. Irene Heijink. Your constructive

comments and suggestions help to improve both my thesis and my critical thinking. Here, I would like to express my special thanks to Prof. Jürgen Bernhagen. You are a pioneering expert on MIF and D-DT research and your papers gave me so many inspirations. I am so excited that you can read my thesis and be my defense opponent. I thank all current and previous colleagues of Melgert’s group. Marina de Jager, as our technician, you are always willing to help. Thank you for helping me with staining, ordering and organization. You are a nice person to talk, and to work together. Habibie and Fransien Van Dijk, I am so lucky to have you two nice and special colleagues during the last few years. Habibie, thanks for all your help, company and sharing the anxiety with me. It’s my honor to have you as my paranymph. I wish you a very successful PhD ceremony. Dear Fransien, thank you for this friendship, understanding and all your help, wish you a wonderful life with Jakko, Josefien and Roosmarijn, and hope to see you soon. Laura Florez-Sampedro, thanks for sharing protocols with me and fighting together with MIF/D-DT monsters. Sara Russo, thanks for helping me with MPI cells, wish you a great time in our group. Jelmer Vlasma, thanks for the discussion about introducing macrophages to organoids, and materials supporting.

Anienke van der Veen, Gwenda Vasse, Adhyatmika, thanks for cooperation, input

to my research and importantly for the companies and friendships. I wish you all the best in your personal life and your future career!

I would like to express my gratitude to all members of the department Molecular Pharmacology. Prof. Martina Schmidt, our captain, thanks for making our department a nice place to work at. Your humor at group meetings is “sometimes” funny, but always inspiring. Your cards and flowers really warmed my heart and cheer me up. Prof. Reinoud Gosens, many thanks for insightful discussions and great

contributions to my project. I still remembered when I gave a presentation in GRIAC meeting, you came and gave me advice for future plans; when I came to you with manuscript revisions, you sent me a long list of your suggestion to each question. I really appreciate your effort and patience for a PhD student who is not under your supervision. Also, you always encourage academic communication and share the latest scientific information in and outside the lab actively and selflessly. All of these show me an excellent example of a scientist. Prof. Amalia Dolga, when our group just moved in, your sunshine-like smiles really made me feel welcomed and included. Your enthusiasm for research encouraged me, especially when I faced difficulties. I can imagine how difficult you faced during building up your own group abroad. Wish you a big success in the research! My sincere gratitude to our organoid team as well: Lose Kistemaker, Vick Verschut, Manon Woest, Luke van der Koog,

Chiara Ciminieri, thanks for collaborations and keeping the organoid team running

smoothly. Marina Trombetta Lima, many thanks for your selfless help. Whenever I asked you for help, you always responded positively despite your busy schedule.

Sophie Bos, thanks for helping me with everything patiently in the lab when we just

moved in. I really appreciate your time and efforts. Mellisa van der Veen, a shiny girl, thanks for introducing lab rules to me and showing me all details in the lab. You were always willing to help whenever I asked. Carolina Elzinga, thanks for all the things you took care of to keep the lab organized and functioning. Brenda Tiemens, thanks for helping us with complex paperwork, it makes our life easier. To the group members: Hoeke Baarsma, Nshunge Musheshe, Angelica Sabogal, Siti Farah

Rahmawati, Asmaa Oun, Tong Zhang, Yuequ Zhang, Pien Goldsteen, Hong Yan, Zaid Elhusseini, Tingting Chen and Margot de Looff, your presence make the

department lively. Even though we just worked together for one year, unfortunately most of the time we work at home or in different shifts. But your kindness and help supported me to integrate into a new department. Thanks for your kindness during the work, and dinners, drinks and pub quiz after the work. I wish you a great time in the department and a happy and successful research.

To all members of the department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Biology, I would like to thank you for your help and collaboration. Prof. Frank Dekker and Prof.

Hidde Haisma, thanks for your great contribution to my project. It was a pleasant

experience to work with you. I learned much chemical knowledge from your team.
