Curriculum Vitae

Mihail (“Michael”) Grecea was born in the city of Pitesti, Romania, on October 18, 1971. After obtaining his “bacalaureat” diploma at the “Radu Greceanu” college in Slatina, he started studying Chemistry at University of Bucharest in 1990, specializing in Inorganic Chemistry. He obtained his university degree in 1995. His undergraduate research project involved coordination compounds of vanadium(III) with trigonal-bipyramidal and pentagonal-bipyramidal structures. In 1996 he obtained his MSc degree in Chemistry, specialization of Coordination Chemistry. His MSc project was devoted to new aspects concerning penta-coordinated compounds in Ligand Field Theory.

In October 1996 he started his work at the Institute of Microtechnology (IMT) Bucharest. The main project concerned electrochemically obtained SiO2

thin films. The results of that work have been presented at several conferences – in Romania (Cluj-Napoca), Czech Republic (Prague), France (Strasbourg), and Austria (Vienna) – and partly published in papers. In the summer of 1999 he spent one month in the group of Prof. F. Koch at Technical University of Munich. In 2000 he launched his own project involving “nano-structured titanium oxide thin layers for energy conversion devices”, with the financial support of Romanian Ministry of Education and Research.

Acknowledgments/Dankwoord

This thesis would have not been possible without the help, collaboration and encouragement of many people to whom I am very grateful. If I have forgotten to mention anyone below, I beg that person’s pardon in advance.

Firstly, I want to point out the decisive contribution of Ellen Backus to achieving the work presented here. Words fall short to express my gratitude for your immense support in these four and a half years! I would also like to thank Bernd Riedmüller and Heiner Scheld for initiating me in the secrets of Potvis and the attached molecular beam. I express gratitude towards Dr. Helen Fraser (now at University of Strathclyde) and Prof. T. Pradeep from Chennai (India) for the fruitful collaboration resulting in Chapter 5 and the other discussions about ice and haloforms, as well as Andreas Eichler from Vienna for the DFT calculations included in Chapter 3. I will certainly not forget the excellent technical support offered by Rob van Schie, Johan Bakker and Peter Schakel.

I am very grateful to all my colleagues for the fantastic working atmosphere created in our group. Although I did not often join for lunch or some of the activities after work, I always felt as being a part of you: Mischa, Aart, Ellen, Euan, Wim, Sylvie, Otto, Mattijs, Bernd, Ludo, Heiner, Andreea, Kees-Jan, Rob, Johan, Emile, Mike, Jérôme, François, Ben, Hella, Jacques, Roman, Colette, Fujun, Sónia, Meindert, Amalia, Junjun, and Reindt.

the people from Friday Night Football, as well as from more recent Friday Night Volleyball. So I was always fit to (reasonably) tighten the screws of the Potvis flanges!

I kept the last words for my family. Thank you for the love and total support you have always offered me: Father (there, in the sky, where you are resting now), Mother, Alin! Dragă tată (sunt sigur că poţi citi aceste rânduri!), dragă mamă, dragă Alin, vă mulţumesc!

Many thanks and gratitude also for the lovely people arrived later “in the team”: Daniel, my parents-in-law, and Corina.

Years ago, friends and relatives began telling me that, generally, I am a very lucky person. I realized that they are right when I met Ştefania.
