Preface

This paper is a placement report which describes all the work I have done during the period of research internship. This report vividly illustrates my motivation to dedicate to this placement, provides a description of the organization offering the placement and the placement itself, and states the placement tasks I have completed comprehensively. The report also states my evaluation and reflections on the placement in detail, from seven various aspects, ranging from the correlation between my course and professional practices to the contributions that this placement made to my career goals. Through this report, others can clearly learn about all the contents regarding this placement and have knowledge of the author’s personal reflection and progress obtained by doing the placement. More importantly, the report to some extent serves as a medium through which the supervising lecturer and others can evaluate whether the placement’s tasks have been successfully carried out and whether the scheduled learning outcomes have been fulfilled. And It is for the reasons stated above that it is of necessity and meaningful to write this placement report, not only for getting feedback and evaluation from supervisors and other people, but also for recording the work and more importantly the reflection got from this working experience.

1. Introduction

During my study of multilingualism, I have more than once pondered over what I really want to probe into. When I was studying the course “Language Planning and Policy”, I got an opportunity to do a team research concerning the management of multilingualism in an immigrant society- the case of Netherlands. On account of this research, I interviewed a typical Hongkong immigrant family in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands and I find it very interesting to research the multilingual families. The research project provided by Eva Juarros-Daussà intrigued me a great deal so I applied this placement and I was so glad that I got the opportunity to work with Eva about family language policy in Internet forums. During my internship, I benefit a great deal in various aspects ranging from the acquisition of theoretical academic knowledge and research methodology to the understanding of family multilingualism and the core of doing research. Moreover, doing this internship contributes to my abilities of tackling problems and negotiating with other people. Furthermore, I raped useful advice on my application for a PhD from Eva during the process of my internship.

In this paper it will be discussed this meaningful placement experience combined with my personal reflections and thoughts. The paper consists of seven major parts, namely the introduction part, three body parts, conclusion part, bibliography part and supplements. The introduction part states some background information about my motivation for doing this internship, illustrates some key benefits obtained by working on the internship, and provides an overview of the paper. The body parts consist of three main perspectives of the internship, namely a description of the organization providing the placement, a description of the tasks and an evaluation of the placement, which will be correlated with my own reflection and thoughts. Among the three perspectives, the evaluation of the placement will be illustrated by seven subsections comprehensively. The conclusion part summarizes the main points of the paper and provides some further reflection on this placement on my process of the internship work. The supplements present 11 tables showing the summary of the work done every week through the whole period of my internship, and some documents recording the work that I have done for the internship.

2. A Description of the Organization Providing the Placement

The organization providing the placement is RUG Research Project “Family Language Policy in Internet Forums”. Deeply rooted in Groningen, City of Talent, RUG is the heart of the city’s higher education and academic research (website rug-about us). With a rich academic history dating back to 1614, the University of Groningen is a research institution of higher learning boasting of a global outlook (website rug-who are we).

The research project includes compiling, organizing, and analyzing data from internet forums and Facebook pages by multilingual families around the world.

(5)

3. A Description of Tasks

The internship is about family multilingualism and heritage languages. The research project includes compiling, organizing, and analyzing data from internet forums and Facebook pages all over the world.

My role in the placement is to obtain the data on internet forums and Facebook pages by multilingual families around the world, and process the data in a quantitative way, and tackle any problems occurred in this process. Besides, I was responsible for retrieving and reading pertinent literature in online university library system and some other research institutions. Additionally, I negotiated with a bachelor student in the process of the project. Also, I played an active role in attending some linguistic talks with my supervisor which benefited me a great deal. And I also explored my application for a PhD during my internship period. Lastly, I write a final internship report on my participation in the project.

Concretely, the tasks of my internship are divided into three major stages: the first period is from February 5th 2018 to March 22nd 2018, and my main task in this period was to collect data from 7 internet forums and Facebook pages and organize the data in a clear manner; the second stage is from March 23rd 2018 to April 15th 2018, and I focused on organizing the overall data and analyzing the data in a quantitative way; the third stage is from April 16th 2018 to April 22nd 2018 during which I had discussions about the data analysis with my supervisor Eva and Lotte (a bachelor student who also contributed to the project), and made an academic poster together. The detailed description of the tasks that I did every working day is presented in Table 1 to Table 11 in supplements.

4. An Evaluation of the Placement

4.1 The useful aspects of my course for the placement

From my point of view, there are five main useful aspects of my course for the placement:

1. The theoretical knowledge that I have acquired from my course of the program multilingualism set a good foundation for my working for the placement.

2. The research methodology that I learned from the course “Essential Statistics” equips me with the basic ability of organizing, processing and analyzing data in a quantitative way like in Excel and R.

3. On account of my knowledge obtained from the course “Language Planning and Policy”, I have knowledge of the family multilingualism and the heritage language. More importantly, this course to some extent motivates me to study family multilingualism.

4. I acquired the capacity to write academic paper and made poster from the course that I have attended. For instance, I learned how to make an academic poster from the course “Minority Languages: The Case of Frisian”.

(6)

5. I have acquired the careful and rigorous attitude towards research by learning my courses, which is of vital importance to my internship.

4.2 The new knowledge and skills I have acquired

First of all, I have learned how to collect, organize and analyze data for

the research project and applies what I have learned in class to practice. For instance, when I was analyzing the data in a quantitative way during my internship, I used the knowledge of R acquired in my course “Essential Statistics”. Secondly, my negotiating and cooperative abilities have been improved as I needed to negotiate and work with my supervisor Eva, and Lotte. For example, in the weekly meeting with my supervisor Eva, we would interact and exchange ideas and negotiate the work to be done in the next period. In addition, I have acquired the ability to tackle problems that occurred during the work. For instance, when I could not retrieve the literature in the online university library system, I contacted the staff in the library and also sent email to other libraries that has the book, and managed to find the literature I needed. Also, I come to understand the essence of doing research and the meaning of studying languages.

More importantly, with the help of Eva, I have learned how to equip myself with qualified knowledge and abilities for a PhD application. For instance, I have started to play an active role in some research activities such as linguistic talks and presentation in the academic conferences. During the placement, I attended two linguistic talks with Eva and did benefit a lot from it. Also, with Eva’s help, we made an academic poster and got our project in the 1st Conference on Frisian Humanities. In the conference, I got the opportunity to present the poster with Lotte to other scholars and had interactions with them, which not only builds up my confidence, but also improves my ability to present academic work in public.

4.3 The correlation between my course and professional practices

One of the definitions of professional practices is “the use of one’s

knowledge in a particular profession” (Reference.MD website). I reckon that my course and professional practices are closely related with each other. Concretely, for one thing, the theoretical knowledge can be employed in professional practices, thereby gauging whether I have acquired qualified professional knowledge concerning my subject. For another, professional practices in turn make contributions to the consolidation of theoretical knowledge.

Regarding the relationship between my subject and internship, as I am majoring in multilingualism and my internship is about family multilingualism. Therefore, it is closely correlated. On account of the knowledge that I have acquired from my courses including family language policy, research methodology, etc., I am able to work on the tasks of my internship. And it is through this opportunity to do the internship that I am

(7)

able to evaluate my professional knowledge, especially its employment in practical research project.

4.4 The extent of learning outcomes to which I have reached

At the end of the internship, all the placement’s assignments were properly carried out, and the planned and scheduled learning outcomes were fulfilled.

Regarding the data collection, I have managed to collect 502 messages from seven internet forums and Facebook pages by multilingual families around the world. With regard to the data analysis, I managed to analyze the data in a quantitative way including clearing the data, a chi-square treatment of the data in R, making relevant figures and tables presenting the results and so on. Furthermore, my supervisor Eva and I made an analysis and discussions about the results and figures that I did, and eventually we did an academic poster together with Lotte. The poster was presented in the 1st Conference on Frisian Humanities in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. More importantly, I successfully solved the problems and difficulties that occurred during my internship. When it comes to my exploring for a PhD, I have received lots of useful advice and feedback such as how to plan my application, how to apply for and participate in academic conferences to improve my research ability and so on.

In order to have a clear look at the work I have done every working day, I made a table every week and wrote down the important points and tasks I completed every day. The tables are presented in the supplements part.

4.5 A description of supervision

In this part, I am to present the supervision in two parts, namely supervision by the placement provider and supervision by the University/Degree Program.

1. Supervision by the placement provider includes:

1) Training in collecting data in the internet forums and Facebook pages 2) Designing effective ways to organize the data

3) Discussing suitable analysis techniques, and posterior analyzing the original data

4) Discussing sessions about the topic, including reading and collecting pertinent literature

5) Weekly meetings to cover all of the above

Every Monday except for some particular change of time, I would have a weekly meeting with my supervisor of the placement, during which I would present all the work I did through the whole week, communicated and

(8)

negotiated with my teacher, solved problems, make plans and so on. And I would make relevant adjustments according to the feedback got from the weekly meeting. Table 1 to Table 11 in the supplements part shows in a detailed and organized way the work that I completed every week.

2. Supervision by the University/Degree Programme includes: 1) Preparations with regard to the contents of the placement

2) Interim evaluation by the form of email interaction about halfway through the placement

3) Evaluation at the end of the placement and grading of the placement report

4.6 An introduction to the reasons why I chose the organization and how I obtained it

As for the reasons why I chose the organization, I think it is related to

my learning experience. Specifically speaking, when I am in process with the field work of the course of “Language Planning and Policy” of MA Multilingualism and when I conducted the interview and had interactions with a typical multilingual Hongkong immigrant family in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, I find it very interesting and intriguing. I think it is of great necessity to study the relationship between language, family and identity. Then I gladly found that my teacher Eva posted two placement

opportunities via Nestor that were about family multilingualism and heritage languages. And I was particularly interested in one of the placements which is concerning the use of Internet forums by multilingual families. After pondering carefully, I made up my mind to send an email with my curriculum vitae to my teacher Eva to apply for this placement and I was so glad that I eventually got the opportunity to work with my teacher Eva for this internship placement.

4.7 The contribution this placement made to my career goals

When it comes to the contributions this placement has made to my

career goals, I would like to illustrate in two aspects, namely short-term career goals and long-term career goals.

For short-term career goals, because my MA thesis is about the language transmission among Chinese immigrant families in Groningen, the Netherlands, and thus it is correlated with my internship. So some literature that I have read for my internship and the professional knowledge and skills I acquired can contribute to my thesis writing. Additionally, I have made up my mind to apply PhD next year. During my internship, I have practically worked for my placement supervisor’s research project, have attended some linguistic talks, participated in academic conferences, learned how to make a well-organized academic poster, etc. All of these experiences are beneficial to my PhD application and my personal development.

(9)

For long-term career objectives, I want to become an English teacher in the university and continue the language studies for my future career. This placement has profound and further influence on my pursuing long-term goal as I learned a great deal from my supervisor Eva in the placement. Because of Eva’s useful advice, help and encouragement, I make progress step by step. And such impact, as far as I am concerned, is long-lasting which will have a positive impact on my realization of long-term career goals.

5. Conclusion

To conclude, in this placement report, I present a description of the

organization providing the placement and the placement itself. In addition, I present a detailed explanation of the placement’s assignments and my evaluation of the placement. The evaluation part is the key part of this placement report, in which I illustrate comprehensively in seven subparts, namely the useful aspects of my course for the placement, the new knowledge and skills I have acquired from the placement, the correlation between my course and professional practices, the extent of learning outcomes to which I have reached, a description of supervision, and an introduction of the reasons why I chose this placement and how I obtained it. All the explanation are correlated with my own reflections and thoughts managed in a coherent and well-organized way.

I reckon that this working experience is undoubtedly meaningful and beneficial to me, not only for my current studies, but also for my long-term language studies and career development. Also, I do make progress a great deal through the completion of the placement.

Theoretical knowledge and professional practices are positively related with each other (website Reference.MD). This paper provides a comprehensive discussion about this meaningful placement experience combined with my personal reflections and thoughts on it.
