Introduction

Before I started my Masters programme, I knew I wanted to work in journalism. The Journalism Masters at the University of Groningen provided both academic and practical skills in their

programme, as well as an internship. This in one of the reasons I chose to do the Journalism Master in Groningen. I feel that developing practical skills, as well as academic skills, at university is key to finding out your personal interests and figure out what you want to do after the studies are done. The internship bridges the gap between the academic field and the work field, which is critical for building a portfolio and getting started in the creative industry.

Throughout the studies I figured out that working in hard news journalism did not really suit me. I preferred to work on more creative projects such as soft news articles and videos. After the courses ended, I chose to take lifestyle journalism, in particular online lifestyle magazines, as the main subject of my Master’s thesis. For my internship I also wanted to work with audio-visuals, preferably in the genre of lifestyle journalism. This is why I applied at Reshift Digital for their position as video intern. With this internship, I was able to work on several different (online) magazines and online platforms. Throughout my internship at Reshift, I have learned so much more than just creating video content. While working on different types of video content throughout my internship, I gained knowledge on every individual part of the video creation process. Furthermore, I got the chance to write articles for the photography magazine Zoom.nl.

1.

Internship background

1.1 Motivation

While searching for internships, I was most interested in working at an internship placement where I would be able to learn all steps within the video creation process. First I was searching for internship placements abroad, because I had not yet been able to go abroad during my studies. However, I found it quite challenging to find internships that would enable me to work with video content in lifestyle journalism. That is when I expanded my search to include The Netherlands as well, and within a few weeks I was invited to many different interview for internships that held my interest.

Reshift Digital was the first interview I did, and it already clicked really well. Even though I had some

interviews after that, I already knew in the back of my mind that the internship at Reshift would check all my boxes. Which is why I chose to do my internship at Reshift.

Even before I wrote up my internship plan, I faced some resistance from the university about the internship placement. There were fears that the internship would not be academically

(4)

4

challenging and that my level of education did not suit the internship they listed online. However, while discussing with both the internship coordinators at the University of Groningen and the placement supervisor at Reshift, we were able to create an internship plan that satisfied every party involved.

My personal motivation for choosing this specific internship was that I would be able to work for different online magazines and different (online) platforms. The internship at Reshift would teach me all the aspects that are involved in creating video content for lifestyle journalism platforms. The subjects of technology, photography, home entertainment and gadgets are topics I am also

interested in outside of work. This, and the reasons I have stated above, were the main motivation I chose to do my internship at Reshift. Looking back at my internship now, I do not regret my choice of internship placement. I was able to learn all of the different aspects that are involved in video creation, and I was able to build a portfolio in both written and audio-visual content.

1.2 Reshift Digital

The company Reshift Digital is located in Haarlem and is the largest media company in The

Netherlands that specialises on technology. It is the owner of around 17 online platforms and print magazines and it is the organiser of around 6 yearly tech-events. These events include events and conferences about technology, innovation, and education. Monthly, all platforms add up to a total visitor count of 250 thousand social sessions, 400 thousand print runs, and two million mobile sessions.

Within the overarching name of Reshift Digital, there are different teams that work on different types of magazines, platforms and events. Around 70 people work at Reshift, and there are many freelancers working for the different platforms. Within the company, there are separate teams for the website of Kieskeurig.nl, for the branded content, the gaming platforms, the technology magazines, the photography magazines, and lastly the content studio, of which I was a part. The kieskeurig.nl and the gaming teams are quite large, while the photography magazines operate with a larger freelance base.

Reshift is a company that creates both journalistic and branded content. The online websites and the print magazines contain both journalistic content, branded content, and advertisements. The journalistic content is created by in-house reporters and freelance reporters, and the branded content is handled by Reshift’s branded and sales teams. The content studio where I worked is a team that worked on both journalistic and branded content for several online platforms. The

reporters and editors of the tech magazines came to the content studio with standard video formats, which we produced for them. Most of the journalistic video content we made were buyers guides for

(5)

5

consumers, product reviews, and informative short news snippets. Additionally, the content studio got video projects from the branded content and sales teams to produce. Mostly, we were given an event or a product we had to make a video about. We were given the freedom to write our own scripts and plans for those branded videos. With the coordination of the branded content staff, we produced the videos for the client involved. Sometimes those videos were in the form of after-movies/event reports, while other branded content was more scripted around a certain product. Thus, Reshift is a company that deals with both journalistic (soft) tech news, as well as branded content.

In the beginning months of my internship at Reshift we had weekly meetings with the content studio and Elmar Rekers, the content innovator. In these meetings we discussed short and long term projects, and the tasks everyone would be doing in that week. However, after a few weeks, these meetings became more irregular because every member of the team was working

independently on their own projects. In the summer period we had some weeks that were not quite that busy. These weeks we used as a moment to pause and reflect on the content we had been making. Therefore, at the end of my internship we discussed how certain video formats could be changed from September onwards, to create more engaging, useful and interesting video content for our online platforms.

One of the formats we brainstormed about was that of Computer! Totaal’s Weekend Update, to see how we could improve our own workflow, as well as make the content more engaging to the audience. My role at that meeting was mostly to state my own input on how to improve the workflow going forward because I had been working on those weekly videos for about half a year. Furthermore, my own ideas on the content itself were taken into account, and they will use my input for when the new interns arrive in September and the new season starts.

2.

Internship at Reshift Digital

2.1 Tasks

The content studio team where I did my internship consisted of around 4 people, one of them being employed at Reshift (Kevin Grin), while the other three positions were both internships or freelance positions. Additionally, my placement supervisor Elmar Rekers, who is a content innovator at Reshift, occasionally managed our projects and put forth new projects and ideas. However, Elmar mostly managed the freelancers while the interns at the content studio reported to Kevin most of the time. Within the video team, Kevin managed the projects we were working on, and gave the interns each

(6)

6

their own responsibilities. We interns at the video team worked independently on some projects, while working together with other team members when needed.

In the first weeks of the internship, I got acquainted with the standard formats that they have for the different platforms. However, after a while, new formats were introduced that did not have a standard format yet. I was able to discuss with the team and improve the current formats, such as Computer! Totaal’s Weekend Update videos, and create new ones. Additionally, we had many meetings on which new formats would suit the target audience, and we were able to try some of them with pilots and some were quite successful. The summer is for the magazines quite a slow few months, therefore these weeks were filled trying to improve on certain standard video formats we have, and set up a plan for September onwards. It was both informative and fun to brain-storm with people from different magazines and platforms to get their input, and that I was able to give my own input and opinions on how to make a format successful.

Throughout the internship I have worked for several different platforms on video projects. Because the team is not that large, I was able to participate in every part of the process in creating a video. I have written many scripts, learned how to set up a studio, learned how to work with external lights, and I have further developed my skills in filming, directing, and editing. Directing was a part of the video process that I was not very familiar with before I started my internship. However, while making review videos and informative buyers guides, it was important that the visuals matched the script. Mostly, I have written these scripts myself, and then you already have a certain structure of the video in mind. For some of the Kieskeurig buyers guide videos we worked with professional presenters, and I directed them on how to talk, move, and how to present the product. In the end, the goal of those videos is to explain to the consumer on how a product works, or you explain the differences between products so that the consumer can make an educated decision on which product is the right one for their situation.

While interning at the content studio I worked for (soft) journalistic projects, as well as branded content. I was able to work on different types of projects over the months that I was there, and I was very glad that the work varied from day to day. Not only was I able to learn all the different steps that are involved into creating a video, I was able to develop and challenge myself on each of these different aspects. I was able to write scripts, scout locations, set up a studio, film, direct, and edit several video projects. Even though many of these projects were different in kind because of the several platforms I worked for, I was able to adapt quite easily to the different environments I was working in.

(7)

7

In addition to the video projects, I worked on in the content studio team, I was given the chance to expand my tasks within the company. In the last few months of my internship at Reshift, the content manager of Zoom.nl, Maarten Jacobi, asked me to be more involved with the magazine and the website of Zoom.nl. In the beginning, I was asked to write articles for the website, and later I was given the chance to maintain several different daily and weekly projects for both the website and the print magazine. The projects I was working on while doing my internship at Reshift were: building a Facebook community, weekly articles, occasional videos, photo of the day, new talents, photo collections, expert challenges, and a print article. The articles I wrote for Zoom.nl ranged from inspiration articles (“5 onontdekte plekken op de wereld voor je fotografie bucketlist”), to more technical content (“Zo werken ISO en ruis in je camera”). In the beginning of the internship, the topics for these articles were provided to me by Zoom.nl’s content manager. However, in the last weeks of the internship I tried to choose my own topics. I was always given the opportunity to pitch my own stories, but in the first weeks it was a bit difficult to get into the content. The more I learned and the more I was working independently on these articles, I became confident with the content matter and I proposed to work on more technical articles. I enjoyed learning about new topics and doing research for my own articles. The photography magazine Zoom.nl only consists of a small team of employees at Reshift. For their content in their magazines and on their website, they rely fully on their freelancers or interns, and the photographs come from the photographers who upload their pictures to the Zoom.nl website. After my internship, I was glad to be invited to keep working for Zoom.nl as a freelancer.

3.

Supervision

The university required its students to do an internship for at least 7 weeks. I decided to do the internship for a period of 6 months. I was still working on finishing my Master’s thesis while simultaneously starting the internship at Reshift in February. Once I was done with my thesis, the official seven weeks of the internship started on the 1st of July 2019, which is when I got my

internship supervisor from the university. Throughout this paper I will mostly refer to the seven official internship weeks I had at Reshift with Jonathan Groubert as my supervisor. However, I might refer to some assignments and projects from the four months I was already doing an internship at

Reshift. I will try to keep those references to a minimum as I was not under official supervision of the

university yet. However, I will need to mention some challenges and surprises I faced throughout the first 4 months of being there, and I will make sure I will reference the specific examples I’m referring to in the appendix.

(8)

8

3.1

Placement supervisor

Elmar Rekers was my placement supervisor at Reshift. However, throughout my internship I did not have many meetings with him about my progress in the company. In the first few months we had meetings with the full content studio team, but there were no meetings about his supervision. Only after my internship was almost done I asked him about his opinion on my work at Reshift so far, and he was quite positive. The placement supervision was pretty non-strict as I was doing my job, and I had never gotten any complaints about the quality of my work. I believe that Elmar was confident that I was able to manage the project quite well. There was not much interference on his part, mostly I was the one who asked for his advice.

There was one project that I was feeling overwhelmed with after reading up on it for a while. It was a new (pilot) project that no one at the company had done before, and I had no personal experience with the format either. While I was doing some research on how to structure the project, my placement supervisor Elmar came to me and asked about how I was dealing with the new pilot video. I confessed that I was quite overwhelmed with the whole project because there were many other projects running at the time, and that I did not really know how to operationalise the project. He agreed that it might be a challenge in the period provided, and postponed the project. In the end I was able to work with a freelancer on this project, taking some of the pressure off myself. I believe that Elmar mostly let me work independently, but he was able to see when I was being

overwhelmed. I think that that is the ideal situation with a placement supervisor; one who is able to let you work independently, but who also knows your limits and notices when you need guidance. Granted, I am personally not a person who would ask for guidance or advise while working on a project, but Elmar knew when he needed to step in. I think the independence and the guarantee of someone having your back was the best supervision an internship would be able to give me, and I am very glad that the placement supervision went this smoothly and constructively.

3.2 University supervisor

My internship at Reshift started in February, but my university supervisor (Jonathan Groubert) became my supervisor around the first of July. We had a Skype call in the first ‘official’ week I was interning at Reshift, and he was surprised to hear that I was working as an intern at Reshift for four months already. In this call he explained how the supervision of the university worked during my last seven official weeks at the company. During these seven weeks I handed in a weekly journal entry every Sunday, on which I received feedback within a few days after handing them in. Throughout these journal entries I was able to explain my experiences as Reshift, ranging from surprises to challenges I faced throughout the weeks. Even though I was working for Reshift for a few months

(9)

9

already, I was still challenged by the questions that Jonathan put forward, especially regarding the issues surrounding journalistic and branded content. Although I faced many surprises and challenges in the first months of my internship before I was being supervised by the university, I was still

challenged to think about the work I was doing. Throughout the six months I was interning at Reshift, it as a nice feeling to be able to discuss my work and my progress in an independent professional environment.

After the initial Skype call at the beginning of the internship I only had contact with Jonathan through Nestor and the occasional email. I believe that he was of the impression that I was doing well and doing a good job, as I had been there already for quite a while. Additionally, Jonathan put forward some interesting statements and questions that I needed to consider in the last weeks of my internship. I am very happy with the constructive comments I have received from Jonathan over the seven weeks, and it was nice that he gave me the independence and responsibility to be able to work on my own throughout the internship.

4.

Evaluation

Throughout the Master’s degree, we learned both practical and academic journalistic skills. The academic skills that I learned in the master programme that I was able to apply during my internship were to do research, to evaluate sources and information, and to synthesise the information in a clear way. During my internship, I wrote several articles for Zoom.nl about how a camera works and how to set your settings in certain situations. Not only did I learn a lot from writing those articles as I had to do a lot of research for the very technical ones, I had to evaluate and filter all the information about a subject that can be found on the internet. The most recent article I wrote for Zoom.nl was about how ISO and noise work in the camera (“Zo werken ISO en ruis in je camera”) and it turned out to be a very technical article with a lot of difficult terms that I needed to relay in an understandable way. Synthesising technical and complex information to create a text that is both informative and understandable for most is a skill that I have learned throughout my studies, and I was able to apply these skills while writing my articles for Zoom.nl.

The skills and knowledge I have gained while writing my thesis were also applicable during my internship. My thesis was about lifestyle journalism, and specifically lifestyle magazines and their online websites. As my internship was at a company that deals with lifestyle magazines and has both paper copies and websites, I was already familiar with the codes and conventions of that type of journalism. The idea that lifestyle journalism is really targeted towards a specific (niche) consumer was interesting to see first-hand, instead of just researching the concepts for my thesis. Nonetheless,

(10)

10

the theories I learned about for my thesis made me understand the choices that the company and the editors took a bit better.

However, my thesis was mostly about written (online) articles, and my internship focussed on both written and audio-visual journalism. The thing that surprised me most throughout my internship that I hadn’t considered beforehand was the branded content that we had for the magazines, and mostly for kieskeurig.nl. I knew from my thesis that lifestyle magazines do post articles that are in the (financial) interest of the news organisation. However, I did not consider the fact that within video, there are also a lot of possibilities for branding. Some of the videos I did for the different platforms were branded video content, and I had never encountered this throughout my studies. I will dedicate a full paragraph on my experiences with branded content versus journalism in another chapter.

There were also many practical skills I was able to use during my internship. Making videos and writing skills were taught in the master programme, and they were very applicable for my internship. The writing skills, even though the master is mostly focussed on news writing, were especially helpful when writing clear and understandable articles and video scripts that dealt with complex subjects. Throughout the master programme, we were also taught how to make (news) videos. Although I was already familiar with making videos, filming, and editing, the television course did teach us how to tell a story and relay information in a visual format. Furthermore, before I had started the television course I had not heard about sequences, and these certainly improved the storytelling in the videos and they improved my filming and editing skills.

The main difference between the Masters programme in Groningen and the internship was the amount of practical skills I have learned, and the amount of branded content involved. Before I started the internship I never guessed the amount of branded content I would be involved with. Especially in the beginning, it was quite a challenge for me to separate working on advertisements and working on (soft) news videos. Many of the branded videos were packaged in such a way that they could be seen as public service announcements targeting the normal consumer.

However, while I was working on more branded projects, it became easier to distance my journalistic practices from the advertisement made for the client. Every piece you create, weather it is a piece of text or a video, you already have a goal and an audience in mind before you start the project. You keep that audience in mind while writing the script, and especially with branded content there are certain guidelines the client has given which you need to adhere to. With the journalistic content, I am trying to write my scripts and texts as clearly as possible, doing a lot of research

(11)

11

beforehand to make sure the information is correct. Branded content is less research, as most of the times the specific company has provided you with points that need to come back in the text or video.

Sometimes it was difficult for me to create branded content which is supposed to look like an actual informative video. These video’s, especially the ones I created for LG and Liebherr in the first stages of my internship were quite low in their branding, and they gave us a lot of freedom to create the content we wanted. In this case, the motive is different from an actual commercial for

Chromebooks for example. We get the freedom to create what we want, but it still needs to be in the interest of, in this case, LG and Liebherr. The idea of the videos was to create more awareness about washing clothes and storing food, but it’s all sponsored in that sense. The branded videos that were posted online all contained a label in the video that stated “Partnerbijdrage” (Partner content) and they were labelled as such in the descriptions of the video. Nonetheless, it felt a bit disingenuous at that time, because you’re creating branded content that needs to look not branded. But I can also see the advantages of getting to make informative videos about household problems with the financial backing of a company that supports you.

Within the Masters programme I missed a specific connection to the journalistic market. During the academic courses we learned how journalism as we knew it did not exist anymore. Before we started the Masters programme we all know it was going to be tough integrating into the

journalism industry. However, there were not many practical skills within the programme that prepared us students to get into journalism. The field of journalism might be a bit different than it was ten years ago, and I would have liked to get a better connection to how journalism is in the modern era. Examples of these are to get a better understanding of freelance journalism (as employment jobs in journalism are rare), or be able to expand beyond the traditional notions of journalism. I personally would have like to have had a larger focus on becoming a freelance

journalist, and on how to build your portfolio. Additionally, I would have liked to have more freedom to work on the (niche) market the students were interested in. Some students were interested in sportsjournalism, or featurewriting, while I was interested in culture and lifestyle journalism. It would have been nice if the students were able to focus more time on their niche, instead of focussing mostly on (hard) news. Additionally, I would have like to be able to specialise on a certain format of journalism similar to the Dutch group. The Dutch group got to choose a specialisation, such as television or writing, while the international group did not get the chance to specialise. In the end, the programme provided us with a wide understanding of journalism practices and the journalistic field. However, I believe the students are lacking much actual working experience, and they lack specialised skills regarding their niche of interest. In addition, I believe that the students lack specific

(12)

12

knowledge about the practicalities of becoming a professional journalist or freelance journalist. Skills I believe we would need to make a career out of journalism in the 21st century.

Ability to meet the goals set in internship plan

Before I started my internship at Reshift, I made an internship plan to set my goals for the internship that I was going to do. The goals I had set for my internship were: learn how to work with Adobe After Effects, develop my skills in visual journalism, develop media strategies, work for several different platforms, both in a team and independently. I believe that I was able to reach all the goals that I have set in my internship plan. Whenever there were days where it was not quite that busy, I was able to teach myself the basics of Adobe After Effects, and later in the internship I was asked to make custom templates and lower-thirds for one of the biggest events that occurred this year in the Zoom.nl community: the Zoom Academy Livestream with two professional photographers.

Additionally, I designed my own lower-thirds for the video reportage I made about the Zoom PhotoWalk.

Because I was able to work for several platforms, I was also able to work on many different video formats. My skills in visual journalism have broadened in ways of storytelling, directing, and interviewing. The different types of video formats have also made me gain knowledge on how to work on video content that is not particularly hard news. Additionally, I have learned which visual and textual elements are needed to make consumer buyers guides and review videos. In the beginning I learned the standard video formats, and after a while I was allowed to improve and elaborate on those. The company is constantly trying to improve its content, and the video content is a part of that as well. I was able to pitch new concept ideas, work on new types of videos, and strategise on how to improve the existing formats.

Lastly, I was able to work both in a team and work independently on several projects. The standard video project of Computer! Totaal of the Weekend Update I always created with someone else, because we needed two people to film and set up the studio. However, for example for Computer Idee’s Dicke Tip videos, I worked fully independently. I wrote the scripts, communicated and set up appointments with the presenter (the editor-in-chief of Computer Idee) to film, set up the studio, filmed, edited, and uploaded them every week to our social media platforms. Most of the Kieskeurig buyers guides I was the one responsible for the video and that the deadlines were met. I wrote the scripts, planned the filming day, filmed, directed, and made the edit. For the filming I was able to ask a colleague to assist me with a second camera, which was helpful in many occasions. As a conclusion, I believe that all the goals I have set for my internship were met.

Conclusions and recommendations

I believe that overall internship at Reshift was a success. Throughout the six months I worked there I have learned several different aspects of creating content for online platforms and magazines. Not only was I able to create videos, I was also asked to help out the writing and online department of Zoom.nl, even though that was not originally part of my internship plan. Over the long period I was there, I got to know the company better, and the people got to know me and my work. Although I already fit quite well within the team, I believe that the long duration of the internship helped me get integrated within the company. I think that is one of the reason why they started to give me new, challenging opportunities and chances to prove myself. I was getting more and more responsibility after the months went by, and the content manager of Zoom.nl noticed my work and gave me the option to do work for them as well. Even though I might have been lucky because I easily found my place within the company, I think that the mandatory seven weeks of internship is not enough time to prove yourself to the company. Additionally, I think that seven weeks it is not enough time for the company to notice your possible future value to the company which is why I recommend to extend the minimal period a student should do an internship to a minimum of three months. Students who wish to do a longer internship will be welcome to do so of course, but at least the students will have gotten a fair opportunity to show their worth, and build a decent portfolio.

Moreover, I wish that the university programme would prepare its student better on how to integrate into the journalism industry. Throughout the studies we were constantly informed through academic studies and personal experiences that the journalistic field is a tough market to get into. However, I think that the university programme has done little to provide us with knowledge and experience to ‘make it’ in journalism. Although the international programme consists of people from all over the world, I think it would be helpful to provide a course on how to become for example a freelance journalist, or how to apply for jobs, make a website, and make a portfolio. I know I was in some way privileged over the other international students because I am a Dutch person, who can speak and write in Dutch, and I was also applying in my home country. There were international students in my Masters programme who wanted to apply for journalism jobs in The Netherlands, but they had little clue on where to start, how to build a portfolio, or how freelancing in The Netherlands works. Even for me, a Dutch person becoming a freelance journalist in The Netherlands, the first steps were quite challenging. I think the programme would benefit a lot from preparing its students for the future after the Masters programme, by providing practical courses on how to build a portfolio, or how to become a freelance journalist.

(14)

14

Additionally, I believe that the university programme should be less focussed on hard news journalism. Granted, hard news is not my personal interest, and I prefer soft news topics. However, I do believe that the Masters programme should include a wider variety of journalistic genres. I do understand that the programme cannot provide for all the wishes that the students might have. Therefore, I have one recommendation for the previous paragraphs’ argument and this one. My recommendation is that the university could provide additional courses or workshops the students are allowed to follow that could expand on topics such as lifestyle journalism, the ethics of branded content, or becoming a freelance journalist. This way the international students would be able to specialise on certain fields, similar to the Dutch programme, while still learning the basics of hard news journalism.
