Curriculum Vitae

The Author of this thesis was born on the 5th of November 1976 in Vlijmen, Noord- Brabant, the Netherlands.

He graduated high school in 1995 and started medical school at the Utrecht University.

At which time he did a clerkship at the accidents & emergency department and operation theatre of the Hospital de Base, S.J. Rio Preto, Brazil. Furthermore he was a teaching assistant at the department of anatomy and physiology at the Utrecht University. After completing medical school in 1999 he decided to explore his horizon and travel through Asia and the Pacific for six months.

In 2002 he finished his clinical rotations and started a 2 year research fellowship on a research grant from the Dutch Arthritis Association at the Leiden University Medical Center, mentored by his promoter: Professor dr. P.M. Rozing. In this period the fundamental research for this thesis was completed and has resulted in multiple international publications and presentations.

Following this fellowship he started his two year surgical residency at Medical Center Alkmaar, department of surgery, under supervision of Professor dr. A.B. Bijnen and Dr. H.S.C. Schreurs in 2004. In 2006 he started his orthopaedic residency at the Leiden University Medical Center under supervision of Professor Dr. R.G.H.H. Nelissen. He now works as an orthopaedic resident at the Medical Center Alkmaar under supervision of Dr. B.J. Burger.

During his medical training he ran three marathons (Rotterdam marathon 1998, New York marathon 2002 and 2006). Michiel is married to Marit and lives in Haarlem.

In November 2007 they were blessed with the birth of their first son, Kasper.

This thesis was awarded the Didier Patte prize (SECEC/ ESSE) in 2007.
