Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook October 13 - 19, 2016

Temperatures:

Below-normal temperatures (1 to 4 degrees C) were observed across eastern Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, while near to above-normal temperatures persisted across the remainder of the region. The GFS model indicates that subfreezing temperatures are likely across the northern half of Kazakhstan and the higher elevations of Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan which is typical for mid-October.

Precipitation

During the first week of October, a cold front resulted in widespread precipitation (10 to 35 mm) across eastern Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The 30- day CPC unified gauge analysis indicates that precipitation has averaged near to above normal throughout nearly the entire region.

During the next week, a large area of upper-level low pressure is forecast to bring widespread precipitation (2 to 25 mm, or more) to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and northern parts of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Locally heavy snow (more than 25 mm, liquid equivalent) is expected at the higher elevations of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
