Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET
October 11 – October 17, 2012
For the third consective week, moderate to locally heavy rains fell over the dry portions of northern Hispaniola.
Moderate to locally heavy (40-75 mm) rains fell over northern Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic for the third consecutive week. The heaviest (> 100 mm) rains were recorded over portions of the Nord department of Haiti and bordering areas of the Dominican Republic, while light (< 20 mm) rains were observed elsewhere. Although the observed above-average rainfall during the past week has helped to reduce thirty-day rainfall deficits over the dry portions of northern Haiti and northwestern Dominican Republic, negative anomalies ranging from -100 to -50 mm have persisted in the region. Meanwhile central Haiti and west central Dominican Republic have experienced wetter than average conditions over the past thirty days. During the next seven days, model forecasts suggest light (< 20 mm) rains to continue across much of Hispaniola. This could, in effect, contribute to maintaining moisture deficits over the dry portions of northern Hispaniola. However, the passage of tropical wave and instable airmass could result in isolated heavy (> 50 mm) showers over the parts of the southern Peninsula of Haiti and southwestern, central, and northeastern Dominican Republic during the next week.
