Acknowledgments

I feel so luck to spend my PhD years at such a great place with so many talented and nice people around me. Without your support, it’s not possible for me to finish this thesis.

Firstly, I want to thank my supervisor Beatriz Noheda. You are the best supervisor I had during my student years. I am so lucky and happy to work in this group under your supervision. I’ve learnt a lot from your personality and working style. You are so caring, inspiring, and supporting. You always prioritize the students, and consider for our sake. I am grateful that you are so available and interested to discuss with me whenever I need. It is your guidance and encouragement that allow me to grow quickly and to be more confident. You set a great example yourself, to teach me become a critical thinking, independent, and rigorous researcher. Also thank you for giving me the chance to present our work in different conferences around the world, and introducing me to different scientists in the field. If I have the chance to be a supervisor in my future career, I hope I’ll be like you.

I also want to thank my second supervisor, Bart J. Kooi. You are such a fast-thinking person. Whenever I discussed my questions with you, you always quickly understood what I meant and explain to me. And thank you for offering me all the help I need. For example, you taught me how to operate TEM by yourself. You allow me to join in your group meeting for a short period of time, and sending Jamo to teach me how to make TEM specimens. Jamo, thank for your patient training and detailed explanations. You made the complicated procedures much easier. Graeme Blake, although I haven’t been to your lecture, I know you are the favorite teacher of many students. You are so kind and easy going and have never refused my request for discussion even when you were busy.

Four years of my PhD life taught me the importance of teamwork. I want to thank my supervisor Beatriz. Because of you, I was able to have such nice collabo-rators. I want to thank Sylvia Matzen for giving me chances to go to the University of Paris-Sud so I had the opportunity to start a new project and learn about the fab-rication of devices. As a beginner, I am grateful that we had spend so much quality

time in exploring this field. You always share your kindness with me without any reservation. I am also amazed by your good organizing skill, which taught me how to do experiments properly by preparing in advance. Guillaume Agnus, you are such a determined doer. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of device fabrications. We wouldn’t have explored so much without you. By the way, I also enjoyed our time doing mountain/cliff climbing in Laussane. Thomas Maroutian, thank you for your strong support to this project. Whenever I needed you, you were always there to offer help and give me comments, which warmed me. Philipe Lecoeur, as a group leader, I am so impressed by your rich career experience, from a musician to a physi-cist. I heard that you built many measurement equipment in your lab, from which I also benefited a lot.

I also had the great pleasure to collaborate with Jorge Iniguez and Hongjian Zhao in Luxembourg Institute. Thanks for your theoretical support, and also patience when discussing with me about structures. I really enjoy the fruitful discussion with you. Besides, I am also very happy to know you, Hongjian. Thanks for listening to me and giving me suggestions when I need your help. I hope you have a happy life and fruitful results in the U.S.

In the meantime, I would also like to thank Brahim Dkhil in CentraleSupelec, Paris. Brahim, we often meet at conferences. It seems that you are everywhere. I also enjoyed a lot to attend your concert, which always makes me very relaxed. Arnoud, you are the one who brought me into the world of ferroelectrics. You’ve taught me a lot in this field. And your ”lazy” work style inspired me to rethink how to work efficiently. Thanks for being so straight-forward with me, so I can improve myself a lot. And thanks for throwing lots of parties with games, food, and wine. I had so much fun during the year you were in the group. All the best with the new job! There is a Chinese proverb saying: “Give
