Chapter 9 Acknowledgments
I have deep gratitude for the many people who have helped me complete this dissertation. I would like to devote the final pages of this dissertation to thank those who support me during this journey.
Foremost, I would like to thank my supervisors, Dries Fames and John Dong, for providing me with the opportunity to complete my PhD thesis at the University of Groningen. Dries, your patient guidance, encouragement and advice motivated me to do my best in my studies. I am so lucky and proud to have you as my supervisor. You have been actively interested in my work and have always been available to advise me. I am very grateful for your patience, motivation, enthusiasm, and immense knowledge in strategy that, taken together, make you a great mentor. John, you have always made yourself available to clarify my doubts, and I consider it as a great opportunity to do my doctoral program under your guidance and to learn from your research expertise. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for your valuable guidance, scholarly inputs and consistent encouragement throughout our research work. I am very grateful for the times that you cheered me up when I felt overwhelmed during my studies.
I am really honored to have these experts in my assessment committee: Professor Jana Oehmichen, Professor Paavo Ritala, and Professor Giovanni Battista Dagnino. Thank you for

all of your guidance through this process; your discussion, ideas, and feedback have been invaluable.
I am grateful for the support I received from the administrative colleagues at University of Groningen. I would like to thank the SOM office, and in particular Rina, Ellen and Arthur, who have been very encouraging and supportive. I am also grateful for the support from the secretaries at the IM&S department, Jeanette, Mirjam and Amanda. I thank my colleagues Hans van der Bij and Jordi Surroca for their valuable suggestions and concise comments on some of the research papers of the thesis. The thesis would not have come to a successful completion without the help I received from the staff of the FEB.
Further, I want to thank all my friends and fellow PhD students: Ye Liu, Gary Ge, Jiyuan Wang, Kailan Tian, Feng Hu, Chengyong Xiao, Linyang Li, Xingchen Yan, Huan Liu, Bingqian Yan, Qiubin Huang, Chenming Peng, Shuo Wang, Bruce Tong, Sarayut Watchasit, Tri Efriandi, Joris, Edin, Holmer, Aneta, Nora and Amber. They have all extended their support in a very special way, and I gained a lot from them, through their personal and scholarly interactions, and their suggestions at various points of my research program and life.
I must express my gratitude to my parents, brothers, and grandparents for believing in me and being there for practical support in all those things of life beyond doing a PhD. I am very much indebted to my wife, Jingjing, who supported me in every possible way to see the completion of this work. I will hold your hand forever. Thanks for everything!
