bout the Author

Nawal El Boghdady was born on 18th January 1989 in Giza, Egypt. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering with a minor in Computer Science from the American University in Cairo, she traveled to Switzerland in 2012 to pursue a master’s degree in Neuroinformatics at ETH Zürich and the University of Zürich. It was there where she was introduced to the fascinating world of the human brain and sensory systems. She worked on a number of projects dealing both with machine hearing and cochlear implants. The former involved investigating the possibility of using the spiking neural output of neuromorphic cochleae (silicon chips built from transistors operating in a certain regime to mimic neuronal behavior) to track a speaker in a multi-talker stream. In her master’s thesis, she investigated the potential of an experimental cochlear implant coding strategy using a neural-based vocoder she implemented. This was evaluated both using EEG (electro-encephalography) and behavioral measures, which resulted in a publication in Hearing Research. After finishing her masters, she moved to Groningen in 2014 to pursue her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Deniz Başkent and Dr. Etienne Gaudrain at the University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen. During her PhD, she had the great opportunity of collaborating with Prof. Waldo Nogueira at the German Hearing Center in Hannover (Deutsches HörZentrum DHZ). She also recently started another collaboration with Prof. Carolyn McGettigan at the University College London (UCL).
