Phase Transitions in Quantum Crystals
On growth of magnetically ordered 3He and a search for supersolid 4He
1. Single 3He crystals grow faster in the CNAF (or high magnetic field) phase than in the U2D2 (or low magnetic field) phase, showing that external magnetic fields influence the growth kinetics of the crystal.
This thesis, chapter 4
2. At zero magnetic field the interface between solid and superfluid liquid 3He couples strongly to the crystal lattice, but at B=2T the interface and the crystal lattice seem to be in the weak- coupling limit.
This thesis, chapter 4
3. No sign of a supersolid transition has been found down to 2mK in solid 4He at melting pressure.

This thesis, chapter 6
4. The upper limit for the density of zero-point vacancies is 1ppm.
I.A. Todoshchenko, H. Alles, J. Bueno, H.J. Junes, A.Y. Parshin, and V. Tsepelin Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 165302 (2006)
This thesis, chapter 6
5. A spherical gravitational wave detector has many advantages over bar antennas: it has a larger cross section, for equal operating frequency. One would have to construct 5 equivalent bars to obtain the same amount of information from a single detectable gravitational wave.

Ph.D. thesis, Leiden University
6. Integrated planar printed antennas with bandwidths up to 20% and gains up to 9dB can be designed using PCS-EBG (Planar Circularly Symmetric Electromagnetic Band Gap).

IEEE Transactions on Antenas and Propagation 53, 3210 (2005)
7. A liquid-helium-cooled MRI receiver coil and DC SQUID pre-amplifier can take images of an arm with signals-to-noise ratios higher than those from a room-temperature coil by a factor between two and three, and as a result reveal greater anatomical detail.
H.C. Seton, J.M.S. Hutchison, and D.M. Bussell Meas. Sci. Technol. 8, 198 (1997)
8. The beauty of physics shows in that 3He has interesting analogies with particle physics and cosmology, and in a sense, it is possible to generate your own universe in a laboratory.
