The focus for rainfall shifts towards the southern Caribbean next week.

During the past week, light to moderate rains were scattered through the region. The greatest weekly totals were observed along the east coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. As much as 100mm of rainfall was locally observed. Elsewhere, observations exceeded 25mm in parts of Guatemala and small portions of northern Homduras. Many more central and Pacific coastal areas received significant this week than recently. Rainfall amounts were near or slightly above average for mid-March in most places Rainfall performance over the past 30 days shows a favorable distribution with most areas registering positive anomalies for the period. In a few places in eastern Nicaragua and Panama these were more than 100mm. Over the past 90 days, conditions appear similarly positive except for a small portion of southern Nicaragua and Costa Rica that exhibits a slight deficit. Vegetation health is generally moderate in the region according to NDVI analysis. Some negative NDVI anomaly is visible in Guatemala, as well as in Costa Rica and western Panama where rainfall has been uneven over the past few months.

For the coming outlook period, the favorable region for rains is forecast to be over eastern Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Rainfall totals of 10-25mm, with locally higher amounts are anticipated. Light rains are also forecasted in southwestern Guatemala.
