Acknowledgments

This PhD thesis comprises the research that I have performed at the Department of Operations of the University of Groningen. This research has been financially supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) through a Research Talent grant. I would like to thank the graduate school SOM and all faculty members who have provided useful feedback during the application process. I am especially grateful to my primary supervisor Ruud Teunter for his large contribution. My supervisors Ruud Teunter and Jan Riezebos have not only provided great guidance on establishing research topics, but also contributed significantly to the dissemination of research output through academic publications, key conferences and summer schools where I could present my findings. The observation that my research got appreciated, applied, and extended by an international audience was the biggest motivation to keep going also at moments where the academic world felt unrewarding. Whereas Ruud played a key role in all my research pieces and helped me to establish many contacts, Jan provided important personal guidance and helped to maintain the red thread in the thesis, especially in the final stages. With Leny Nusse and Nicky van Foreest I have had several discussions on various topics, which were important to me at key moments during my PhD trajectory.

To the other co-authors of parts of this thesis - Aris Syntetos, Zied Babai, John Boylan, Nicola Saccani and Filippo Visintin - I would also like to express my grati-tude. A special word of thanks goes to Stefan Minner for allowing me to spend half a year with his research group at TU Munich, and for the pleasant ongoing collab-oration. I furthermore thank him, Rommert Dekker and Kees Jan Roodbergen for taking place in my assessment committee. My interest in research was triggered by nice collaborations with Christoph Hanck and Tom Wansbeek during my BSc and MSc studies.

Friends and C++ experts Albert Schrotenboer and Michiel uit het Broek have def-initely made my time in- and outside the Duisenberg building more enjoyable, just like my office mate Gerlach van der Heide, education colleague Bram de Jonge, Bart Beemsterboer, Bolor Jargalsaikhan, Ward Romeijnders, all other PhD candidates that were present at the department during my trajectory, and the colleagues in Munich. From the other departments I would like to particularly mention the all-round boss Dani¨el Vullings, Pok´e- and Moringa master Steffen Eriksen, and R artist Nick Ko-ning. Outside academia my good friends Jibon Ali, Marian Krom, Toine Schouteten, and the Winschoten guys helped me to not lose sight of the ‘real’ world.

I appreciate that Dani¨el Vullings and Patricia Rogetzer have agreed to be my paranymphs. Starting with a mutual student assistantship, Dani¨el and me estab-lished a nice friendship throughout the years, fed by our good understanding about work-related, but even more about non-work related matters. My girlfriend Patri-cia surely needs spePatri-cial mentioning. When we first met at the ISIR Summer School in Hamburg, neither of us had foreseen that what would develop since then would make such a tremendous contribution to our PhD trajectories and simply to our lives. I am extremely grateful that she supports me during my defense, and look forward to starting the next chapter of our life together. Let’s go, amigo!

Finally, I would like to thank all other colleagues in- and outside Groningen, friends and family. Especially to my parents I am deeply indebted for their under-standing, pride, and everlasting support.

Bedankt!
