Nursing in long-term institutional care
An examination of the process of care Astrid Tuinman, 6 januari 2021
11. Sometimes it is not enough that we do our best, we must do what is required (Sir Winston Churchill).

Nursing in long-term institutional care
An examination of the process of care Astrid Tuinman, 6 January 2021
1. Inadequate role differentiation between nursing staff in long-term institutional care negatively affects the quality of care (this dissertation).
2. The employment of bachelor educated nurses will contribute to the quality of care.
3. The nursing care provided in long-term institutional care is task-oriented rather than person-centered (this dissertation).
4. Beyond expressing a vision of person-centered care, implement it!
5. The accuracy of the nursing documentation in residents’ care plans contributes to the person-centeredness of care (this dissertation).
6. Regular assessments of care plans by nursing staff will contribute to the implementation and adherence of professional standards regarding nursing documentation.
7. Inadequacies in the coherence of nursing documentation imply that nursing staff lack sufficient clinical reasoning skills (this dissertation).
8. Quality indicators should be outcomes that are sensitive to nursing interventions to be able to make statements about the contribution of nursing staff to the quality of care (this dissertation).
9. To be able to make statements about the quality of care, the secondary quality outcome data derived from mandatory standardized surveys and/or reviewing recorded information will have to be supplemented with direct observations of the care that is provided.
10. A vision on ongoing professional education of nursing staff in long-term institutional care is essential as their initial education is not sufficient in meeting the complex care needs of residents.
11. Sometimes it is not enough that we do our best; we must do what is required (Sir Winston Churchill).
