Analyses excluding the effects of age within each group

Statistical approach

Main analyses were repeated excluding the effect of age within each group. We fitted a

General Linear Model (GLM) per group including age as a regressor (mean centered

within each group) and tested if the intercept was significantly different from zero. Then,

for each between-group pairwise comparison, a GLM was fitted including group as a

regressor of interest and two age covariates, each one containing the within-group mean

centered age.

Results

As indicated in the figure below, the p-values after excluding the effect of within-group

age were comparable to those obtained in the main analyses (Figure II of the manuscript).
