Gas, dust, and star formation in distant radio galaxies

1. Massive radio galaxies form the bulk of their eventual stellar populations in a short burst.

(Chapter 2) 2. Starbursts are generally the dominant contributors to the rest-frame far-infrared

emission of radio galaxies.

(Chapters 2 and 5) 3. Compact ultra steep radio spectrum sources with very faint near-infrared

coun-terparts are likely distant radio galaxies in an early stage of their evolution. (Chapters 3 and 4) 4. Giant emission line halos surrounding distant radio galaxies provide unique lab-oratories for studying the feedback mechanisms that control the formation of massive galaxies.

(Chapters 6 and 7) 5. Radio galaxies are not “freaks”.

6. Duct tape holds the Universe together. 7. Niets is onvoorstelbaar.

10. The best climber in the world is the one who’s having the most fun.

Alex Lowe
