1. Young people in care are the experts when it comes to themselves (this thesis). 2. Eventually young people in care only themselves can decide if they want to change, and how (this thesis). 3. Residential youth care workers have to emphasize the role of young people’s own choices regarding their behavior (this thesis). 4. Residential youth care workers should avoid MI nonadherent behavior, such as confronting adolescents or giving them information and advice without their permission, as much as possible (this thesis). 5. By using MI nonadherent behavior, residential youth care workers are at risk of taking on the role of someone ‘who knows best’ (this thesis). 6. The Up2U training program can contribute to strengthening the professional skills of residential youth care workers (this thesis). 7. Residential youth care facilities should pay more attention to the implementation process of training programs like Up2U (this thesis). 8. We must get rid of the idea that
residential youth care is a 'last resort' (this thesis). 9. In order to -even better - meet the needs of the often problematic target group, it is crucial to (continue to) invest in good residential child and youth care (Harder, 2020). 10. Not all young people in need of 24/7 care may benefit from placement in a foster family; placement in a residential group may be the preferred option (Vanderfaeille et al., 2016). 11. In all actions concerning children, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law,
administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration (Article 3.1; United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989).
