Katelijne van Emmerik-van Oortmerssen was born in 1978 in Ede, the Netherlands. She then worked in several medical fields (psychiatry, neurology, public health). In 2009 she started working on a PhD program on the prevalence, diagnostic assessment and treatment of ADHD in SUD patients at Arkin in a collaboration with the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam (AMC) and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
