Read more about Paula and the history of the club on the next few pages.

We wish you all a very good 2022.

Arjan kicked off the New Year meet with well wishes for all. He hopes we can resume meetings outside, weather permitting so we all feel more safe. He had been busy baking oliebollen and appelflappen. They were a great success although more members (former members) could have

enjoyed this as we had plenty. Arjan; “I hope to see you at our next meeting!”

Tafel!”

Ilse and friend kept a seat open for Roos.

As for Roos, she had car trouble while driving to the club, obstructing traffic.

The police had to get involved. Roos convinced a police officer she had to be at the club, so he gave her a ride. More details ask Roos.

John, the fiancée of Barbara was our Bingo master! Kim brought some good prizes.

Gerard exclaimed to have the wrong cards. He had fun though!

Jitske informed us about the new members, Arend and Anneliesbeth, who recently moved to the Bay area.

It turns out when Peter was talking to AnneLiesbeth they attended the same highschool in The Netherlands, though

Holland Club Tampa Bay Member Corner TRAVEL

Alles ging steeds strakker zitten.

In Nederland gebruikten we "spoedtest.nl" (40 euro p/p).

Although rules keep changing all the time, it looks like nega- tive COVID tests 24 hours before departure will stay a re- quirement for travel to and from Holland. We used

"beepermd.com" for our tests: it was free, we got results within an hour, they came to our house for the test, and they were even open on Christmas Day. We used

"spoedtest.nl" in Holland (40 euro per person). It turned out that spoedtest will text a pin to access your test results by email: this was problematic since my phone didn't work in Holland.

My advice would be to use the Dutch phone number from your host when signing up for this service if your phone doesn't work in Holland: it will save you lots of time and headaches.

We finally were able to visit our family in The Netherlands in

2.5 years. There was some tension whether we were able to fly because of the Dutch Government lock downs. But, all went well and the reunion was heartwarming. That was a good thing because it was very cold outside. One day you are still in your shorts in 82F, the next day you get off the plane at a tempera- ture of 28F. And believe me, that's not funny. Emma in partic- ular had a lot of trouble with the cold. He had several layers of clothing on every day and could not get hot yet. But the many warm hugs from the grandmothers and grandfather and her friends made up for a lot. Rick had a great time in the Nether- lands. He enjoyed the freedom and independence while going out with his friends. Just taking the bike and hanging out with your friends is something he misses very much here in the US.

He can't wait until he's finally 16 and can go out without us.

A few days later, Christmas was on the program. I had been looking forward to a real Dutch Christmas, with church at- tendance on Christmas Eve and 1st Christmas Day. But unfor- tunately, due to the lockdown, that did not take place. So this year we celebrated the birth of Jesus online again. But on Christmas Eve, that was in good company. We were with very dear friends. We celebrated Christmas Day with Eric's brother and his whole family.

We enjoyed typical Dutch snacks such as filet americain, dry sausage, pickle in sandwich sausage and of course bitterballen.

I already felt like a roulade with all the layers of clothes on to keep warm, and all those snacks didn't make it any better.

Everything got tighter and tighter. We celebrated New Year's Eve in the Netherlands and despite a fireworks ban, quite a lot went up in the air. Rick and Emma enjoyed it and engaged in all the fireworks.

It is hard to leave everyone behind again. Even though we are perfectly in our place here in Florida and I would no longer be able to ground in the Netherlands, my heart is also there. At least as long as our parents are still there. Now let's hope that all borders remain open and families can come our way again.
