Hazards Impacts Assessment for Hispaniola May 20 – May 26, 2010
Favorable amounts of rainfall were received in the southern coastal departments during the last week; however moisture deficits strengthen in northwestern Haiti.
An improvement in rains and ground moisture were observed across the southern coastal departments during the last seven days. In other areas in the north and central departments, little to fair amounts of precipitation (10-25mm) were received, with the highest rainfall totals observed towards the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic. During May, rainfall activity has remained relatively suppressed, with the largest monthly moisture deficits observed mostly along the northern Haitian coastline. Precipitation forecasts suggest a potential increase in rainfall amounts (>50mm) across much of Hispaniola over the next seven days. This is expected to relieve many local areas affected by short-term dryness during May.
